Well the MG seems to be making its way through the flock without causing any casualties. The first chick that showed symptoms is doing a little bit better, although it hasn't been very long since they started showing symptoms. The two hens' symptoms are gone, but the other girls are starting to show symptoms, so it's making its way through.

In other news, I let everyone out in this FANTASTIC weather!

First, the brooder banties

OMG...Margarita party...oh I so want (would have wanted) to be invited. I love margaritas.

They were pretty good! They actually had about 3 blenders going and at least 3 or 4 different kinds of Margaritas. I stuck with a regular on the rocks for the first 2.

I'm in Chehalis. Depending on the day, I might be able to help with some of the southern leg of his journey!
Where is he going to end up at?

I think Oroville? That's way north of Bellingham? I don't know where Oroville is and haven't looked it up yet. I could get it close to Seattle, where I think I'd be meeting with Hallerlake, but beyond that point I'm kind of lost. Who is farther north?

To find Oroville...go approximately 1/2 way across the state - East. Stop, at approx Wenatchee, turn Left, go North. When you hit the Canadian Border...You are in Oroville.

No, Red, you are correct, rat and mouse bait is NEVER safe for pets. Let me tell you as an emergency room veterinary technician, there is no such thing as a rat, mouse, gopher, slug, snail or mole bait that is safe for pets, even if it is labeled as such.

The rat and mouse baits that make the rodents bleed to death internally does the same thing to dogs and cats. It doesn't matter if they are "bruised" or not from crawling through small spaces, it will make them spontaneously bleed internally and they will die if not treated early enough.

The other type of rat and mouse bait (active ingredient is bromethalin) causes neurologic symptoms and does not affect clotting ability. Once a pet shows neuro symptoms from ingesting this type of rat bait there is nothing that can be done for them, it is not reversible like the anticoagulant type can be.

While we're on the subject, the slug bait that says "safe for pets" ISN'T. I don't know how many dogs our ER clinic has treated for ingesting that type of slug bait...

Just for the record. I do have a slug bait that is safe for everyone else....
....take a cool whip bowl...fill it about 1/2 full of beer. submerge the bowl in the ground partially, try to cover with room to get under the cover...SLUGS LOVE BEER. They fall in and drown. This is great slug bait.

Speaking of slugs - DH and I were putzing around in the yard today and I turned over a clay dish and found a nice fat slug. Remembering the video I'd seen I decided to take it to the coop to see if there was any interest from the girls. I dropped it on the ground and they looked at it and walked away. I picked it back up and dangled it like it was a shiny prize and Dilly, the lavender AM, came and sampled it, which brought Harper, the black AM, which intrigued the Barnie, Mimi, who promptly snatched it and ran circles around the run playing keep away with the other girls. (Whitey Ford was missing the fun because she's still sitting broody on her nest.)
I was laughing and ran to get DH but by the time we returned there was no sign of the slug except the gooey mess still left on Mimi's beak.

Harper and Dilly, being the good friends that they are followed her until she stood still so they could clean her beak for her. I enjoyed the display of cooperation as much as the slug chase. I told DH if he finds anymore yucky slugs now we know what to do with 'em. Such good girls.

I returned home a while ago after receiving a distress call from my (almost) 19 year old daughter. She's house sitting for my parents while they're out of town which involves taking care of my Dad's cat, Maxx. Lily had gone to let the cat in the back sliding glass door and he was standing there with a baby bunny in his mouth. She got him to drop it, but he snatched it up again. She called me and I rushed over there to find her sitting on the back deck crying, with the tiny dead baby bunny on a paper towel in her hands. It had expired just a few minutes before I got there. I examined the poor thing and found a good sized puncture wound on it's tiny back.

I dug a hole and we buried him in the Secret Garden under the bridge that leads to their front door. It's a shady area with a bench and statues of fairies and woodland animals so it seemed a fitting resting place.

Maxx has been banished to his sleeping quarters for the rest of the night.

Went thru similar when my daughter was 17. Good student, no issues, then suddenly she's smothered and has to leave. ? Law said she could, so what could I do but stand by? I left the country. I told her straight out I wasn't going to hang around for the Sheriff to show up and tell me she was in jail or, God forbid, dead in a ditch. I told her I refused to do it.

Soooo hard to do, but that tough love thing really works. Several months later she was working 2 burger joint jobs just to pay rent and all her "friends" were eating her groceries and abusing her hospitality. Large. The truck we had given her had been impounded, and all her "friends" were drifting away since she couldn't drive them around...

I am SO fortunate. My youngun finally realized I wasn't the bad guy. We worked out a living arrangement that included her contributing to expenses, even tho I didn't need it.

Now my oldest grandson is about to graduate. He's giving her grief, very much like you've described. And so the cycle continues...

I wish you strength, sista girl, until your DS figures out what he's losing. And I will keep ya in my prayers...

What beautiful photos of the babies! Love the pics of the mom and babies. Glad to hear you haven't had any casualties from the MG. How is that treated and is it something that runs it's course then goes away? Something else I need to research I guess...
