Weavegarden, don't feel bad, I am the official crazy duck/goose lady around here. When I was trying to teach Rommy and Ranaya to fly, in the morning in my white fluffy housecoat, I would run them down to park flapping my wings yelling, "Wack wack wack." Behind me, running and flapping like crazy, were all my ducks and geese quacking, wacking and honking the "let's fly song" with me. Two separate neighbors told me they made sure they had their morning coffee out on their decks so they could watch our morning antics. My one neighbor would cheer us on (she must be crazy too). I don't know what the rest of the neighbors thought.

I know there are a few people here at BYC that have chickens living inside. Though Nettie and Joe (from the website) are duck people, I bet if you wrote them off a note, they would make you something. I think the only difference would be that you would have less mess. Little indoor chickens would be great! Nettie and Joe built an indoor "coop" for their ducks. They had one that fit in a closet when they were in an apartment. They do suggest for poultry health to only have them diapered between one and two hours at a time.

I want to be your neighbor so badly. I would have been out there in my red robe flapping with you. Only, I would have had a thermos of coffee in a backpack so that once the lesson was over we could squat among the flock and imbibe in our favorite beverage along with the neighbors.

Oh, and I don't really feel badly at all. I don't really mind being known as "crazy". The one woman who walks by here everyday and won't make eye contact and won't say good morning back kind of makes me feel bad. I think she is afraid of me.

I wouldn't have the diapers on much, but it would be a great option for when I want to let them roam and explore. Since I had Archie and his buddies hanging out by the computer and not moving from their designated area, I think I could make some chickens pretty happy with an indoor lifestyle. I would of course have an area where they could be outside "under wraps". And I wouldn't do big chickens because of the ordinances. But a couple of tiny girls would be unnoticed and if they are polish or silkie, most people wouldn't even know they were chickens.

I am convincing myself, I think. If it works out, I may just be contacting you about miniture geese in the future. Or, I may decide to do the geese instead. I would need quiet ones. I loved watching the tub full of feeder fish on Nettie and Joe's website. What a fun time those ducks were having.

My mice are settling in very nicely. I think they like having their own place away from Shannon's other 4 mice. When hers had babies, there were only 4. I hope my first litter is small also. I want to ease into this, and not have 20 or so within a month of getting them. Yikes..... That is a scary thought.

I hope everybody has a great day. Mine is going well for a dark and drizzly winter day....... Oh where is that sun.

Weaveagarden and Rainplace - I am soooo in!!! Normalacy is so overrated. I was telling my BF about Nyrial having a rooster in the house watching Spongebob and he just shrugged and said he knew already that would be us someday.

Yes, yes, resistance is futile (insert evil laugh here).

I just wanted to say thank you two so much for making my day! My job has been pretty depressing recently and these last posts had me laughing my head off at my desk.

Keep it up ladies and I just may pull out of this funk....

Oh Yes - can I be a neighbor too?! We could all cavort, flap and sing with the flocks. The block could be called the Funny Flock Farm. BF and I have talked about having an unusual Zoo of sorts. We heard about these penguins that make a shrieking sound and I told him we should get some just to tease him. Then I told him about fainting goats and it was on. We thought we could get some spitting camels or llamas and charge money to wear our special grocery bag outfits when you go to see them. Now it appears we need a Spongebob watching rooster and the duck flapping ladies to round out our Zoo...

Weaveagarden - I also cannot wait to start my garden. I did not do a very good cleanup this year and I wish it was drier so I could go out and finish up. And I have been reading seed catalogs at night (referred to as seed porn by BF) dreaming of the garden. Last year we expanded greatly to include a chunk of the former horse pasture and my parents house. We grew tons of pumpkins, corn and broccoli there. But, my mom says she does not want to be out there watering anymore so I am not sure we can make it work this year. We will see....

We are going out of town this weekend and my family does not want to take care of the chickens. Something about the big rooster attacking them.

Their food bin will be full and I think I can convince one of them to come and poke a hose in one time to make sure they don't run out of water. But I will worry about them. It is a bit irrational. The coop is secure and opens into a secure run but at night before bed we close the pop door between. It is in no way secure and any raccoon that managed to get in the run could easily open it but somehow it makes me feel better having that door closed at night. BF is going to need to design a door that opens on a timer for me I think.

I'm begining to think ALL of you people are SMELLING TOO MUCH CHICKEN POOP

I've had three. When are you leaving and when will you be home this weekend ? I could check on your chickens, and lock them up at dark on Sat. night. I don't get home till about 11:00am-noon on Sunday from work. but I could go over there then Your in Mill creek right??? You can PM me, with details if you like. I promise I'll only take enough eggs for breakfast (for ten people)
