uns to the hen house! She's a better flock guardian than any of my roos! Only she will not wander far from the coop where the others like to explore new territory.

Will ravens take a chicken? We have those and crows here.
I also noticed a turkey vulture has found our house. I'm thinking they would take a chicken. Am I wrong?

I know the answer!!! I looked that one up!!!! Turkey vultures WILL NOT take a chicken (unless it is dead). They lack the talons.

A Raven could. They fly by periodically here, but have not bothered mone, too many other critters to go after like millions of baby bunnies.
(It's going to be a bad summer with all the bobcats that will come after the bunnies)

Hey

I spent yesterday morning just fooling around relaxing while turning the compost pile by hand. The tractor should be back from the shop this week.

In the afternoon I worked on a quail hutch for Rainwolf. It will look something like this when it's finished:

She's requested some modifications - mostly that each 'shelf' is a contained unit, and that the units can be stacks. I'm making her three 'units'.

I like to use lap-joints, so I started with the Radial-arm saw and the dado-blade:

While I was working I kept seeing something dart around out of the corner of my eye. After a while I took a break and waited. This guy won't be stealing any more chicken food from me. For I am a mighty hunter

(Only missed once!)

I have to plant a memorial tree today - a real nice crab-apple (Noelle was my little crabby-apple-seed) that the folks from my office purchased and are coming to help plant. I will meet them at 11 at the Nursery because they need a truck. I'm going to try and finish Rainwolf's first quail unit before I have to leave for that. Then I hope to make a run to HD to pick up the lumber for the remaining two quail hutches and for some stuff for RFF

I have never seen a turkey vulture kill anything.
Even a half dead deer, as long as it is still alive, they will back off & waite.
never seen a crow or Raven kill a chicken either.
It is funny to watch my flocks when a T Vulture flies overhead, they look, and go about their business.
When a hawk or eagle flies over at the same hieght, all the Cocks sounds the alarm, and all birds run into their coops, and you cannot see a chicken anywhere here.
The difference is the white triangle under the vulture's wings, and they have a longer thinner tail.
The hawks & eagles are solid colored & have a broad rounded tail.
How do chickens know what is what ?

Lovely workshop !
I want a dado BAD!!
And a tabe router.
Just bought a new big radial mitre/chop yesterday, the other one too small for building a house.
The tablesaw is in CA and is OLDER than dirt....has a bad starter too.......too old.
Great shooting!
Did ya blow a hole in your concrete ??
DH's Dad has 10 acres 3/4 in Almonds, 1/4 in walnuts & apricots...and the ground squirrels drive him crazy!
He had his 12-g out, trailing a bead on a running squirrel that was hauling buns through the orchard, and getting a slight lead on the critter, he pulls the trigger, (the whole time he had his eye on the bead)
And blew the tire out of his 1-ton truck !!
BOOM!!!!! Fizzzzz.....just like a cartoon!
Squirrel stopped & stood up & looked ???
Dad did not see the truck in his attempt to lead the moving target.
I took a .410 to him..so he is not shooting trucks anymore

Now I miss my .410.......................

I'm getting that one, blooms in SHADE!!! Smells nice too and is gorgeous!!! Thanks!

I am going to search for one here, instead of buying & having it shipped.
If I find one, I will get you one too.

Last night my allergies kicked in..finally.
My nose stuffed, sneezing & pain in the nasal-pharengeal area, (just above the back of your tongue)
I have the salt water nasal inhaler, and did that & went to bed.
This morning is is awful...feels like a case of strpt throat, only I know it is just an allergen making my immunal system very angry & attacking.
Maybe due to all the 3 foot tall grass I have been weed wacking the last few days.............

Have to jet outta here about 9:30 to go meet Boldog & get eggs she has bought, so I can incubate them for her.
She bought something like 30 eggs on line, of awesome, rare game fowl, had them shipped (several types) and had a woman at a feed store incubate them.
After about 30 days she called the woman to see if the babies were ready to pick up.
And the woman (who was obviously avoiding Diane completely) said, "umm, well, umm, there was an incubator malfunction and the chicks never hatched"
somad.gif

And then she did not even save the bad eggs & return them to Diane.
I still think she hatched them, and kept them, or someone sold them by mistake ?
Note to all:::
If you ever hatch for someone, and candle to find dead embryos or clears, or no pips, keep all the eggs in a carton in your fridge to return to the owner to prove you did not sell the chicks.
give every egg, or every chick back.

Three days to go Rainwolf!!
My best wishes for a good hatch!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since I am basically talking to myself..I will go get some work done & be back later tonight.
Bye all!!

I don't think either will take a live chicken. I know they will take small critters like mice. When brush hogging or mowing/raking hay there will be lots of them following ya.

I have never seen that white triangle. I do know that one quick way to tell if hawk or eagle is that hawk is light on the under side eagle is all dark. Also buzzards will only take what is dead. So if ya have buzzards circling ya better check to see. We had 10 of em out in our field once so I went to see what it was and I found the remains of some body's cat.

Here's a little funny for ya. DW was setting in the yard last summer. I walked up and she points to the sky and says what are those. I look up and there are 6 buzzards circling. I said BUZZARDS ya might wanna get up and move around a bit! So now that is the thing around here when we see em.
