So was this mottled Ameraucana one of your fluke chicks? It's beautiful!!!!

Yes, remember when she was hatched I thought she must be a splash?
Of course Jean popped on & told me, no, she is not a splash, a splash being a dilution of black.
This baby is pure black, and pure white, slate legs & great beard too..she is gorgeous.
I have to breed her to a white, I think, to try for more mottled..maybe a black?

She was so cute even at hatch !!!

Not to white! Breed her to black, the babies will all be black and split for mottled. Breed one of those split baby boys back to her, and some of the chicks that hatch from that cross will be mottled, some will still be split. Once you have more mottled chicks, they should breed true if bred back to her. Fun project!!!!

You can also use blue and get blue mottled!!! I love the look of blue mottled cochins, I want some one day!

OK, it's been fun. But I should get back to work. After touching up the wax floors Sunday, all the furniture is all piled high in the living room, and the kids have been having fun playing do not touch the floor! I really ought to put it all back so I can get this place ready to host this neighborhood shin-dig on Thursday. Praying for SUN because we are serving BBQ and are hoping most folks will be on the deck! So back to housework I go. .....did I mention my knees are killing me and all bruised? I was the lucky one working on the floor while DH followed behind with the Orbital Buffer doo-hickey.

Absolutely gorgeous.

Would it be possible for you to post me a photo of a pullet and a cockerel orp - around 3-4 weeks old? (or even a bit older if you have it) Do you have anything like that? I would like to use as a comparison for my group.

I tried to get pic's of mine this morning for my Craigslist ad, but all of the girls were hiding in every shot. The Orp's take a really long time to sex, mine are 6 & 7 wks old and I'm just starting to feel sure about who is who. Their combs are bigger/pinker than the girls.

I will take pics of the new babies as they grow up, the cockerel in the above pics was easy to tell. he always looked like that. with mine, the pullets get tails and the cockerels do not. pullets have small pale combs and the boys combs and wattles turn red and get bigger than the girls first. its not 100% accurate but pretty close. at 12 weeks its easy to tell most of them as the boys are growing saddle feathers and the pullets saddle feathers are blunt and round where the boys are getting very pointy

I went through the baby bunny trauma a couple of weeks ago when DD was housesitting for my parents and Dad's cat brought a tiny bunny home alive. He only has a few teeth left, (cat is 14), but he had enough to do damage when DD tried to get the baby away from him. Lily called me crying and I rushed over, but bunny was already gone, so we buried him.

Hope all your extra roosters find good homes! I'm curious at what age most of you decide to let your cockerels go? I've got one guy that will have to go, but he's only 5 weeks right now.
