I think this is the ticket -- two flocks, a breeding/project flock (In my case Wyandottes) and a layer flock - for me, that's RIR's and some EE's.

Thanks everyone!!

Now -- what color 'dottes

Some of each color!!!

THAT'S WHAT I WAS THINKING !!!

I had Gold laced wyandottes, Silver laced Wyandottes, and white wyandottes! They were great foragers, large, and layed just as well as the rest of my floc bac then did. I thin the only breed that I had the out layed the rest of the flock was the Leghorns...

1 of my SLW went broody. Now I had 1 of my CM go broody & she'd put up a show when I took her eggs but never pecked. I gave her some chicks to take care of. Now my SLW is broody but man is she nasty. It hurts when they peck. I have no roo so I can't just let her nest on eating eggs. I also have as many chicks as I can't handle. I have 4 chicks & plan to sell 2 as I only wanted 2 hens of this breed. Not sure what to do with the SLW, she is my best looking towards the breed as I can tell for a hatchery bird. Big, plump, small crown & color is decent (to me anyway). I just don't like that she puts on a show & peck

Last night I put her in a small wire dog crate with a board for a roost & food/water. Hopefully that will break her of the broodyness, not sure how long to do this? Problem also is with baby chicks with the other broody hen, would hearing & seeing baby chicks just make her want them even more? All in the same coop.

Shannon

I hate spelling, I re-read that several times & didn't catch it till I read it already posted

I put my broodies in a wire crate for a few days or as long as it takes. By themselves. They make those broody noises and they fuff up and peck at me so when they stop that behavior I let them out.

now that I am thinking of it I think Debbie told me they were olive eggers If so I would be happy for any color they are. So does olive eggers mean not amerucana ?

That would mae him an easter egger, or Olive egger. lol Mixed breed, but still very handsom none the less! My Olive egger cockerals are very pretty and so friendly, they are a pain because they are always underfoot!

My pullet that came with him chased off a robin to keep it out of the chicken run!

good girl!!!

No it isn't, 30 below is cold, as in North (north north) Idee-ho.

Ok.. I have to chime in here....

any temp below is not nice but.....
the higher the humidity the colder it feels the worst it gets.
I lived in Idaho for 4 years...
Been here the rest of my life...
Visited Fairbanks AK in Dec to visit Santa in the "North Pole" with 2 youngins...

-10 in Fairbanks is about the same as -10 in Boise which = about 0F in western soggy Washington.

Yakima... having spent many a weekends visiting grandma when I was a kid.... about in between Boise/Western WA...

"Really cold" is relative

I've lived here for 35 years. Coldest that I've ever seen it was about -15. Twice in that time span. Normal winters for us could have a week or so of single digits. We will get into the teens every winter. I will probably run power to the coops to keep the water from freezing, so heating is not really a problem.

I don't like feathered-feeted birds

Dave

BTW: -15 is *really f'in cold*

I'll take Crele anything, myself, far in the future, when the Barn's cleaned out and I've got solar panels and so on. Are there really Crele Wyandottes?

Ill trade you your one crazy one for a bunch of not so crazy ones! lol

Thanks but no thanks!

I want to get down to just a couple of roosters that get along so I can let EVERYONE out to free-range at the same time.
