LONG day. I really need to figure out where my sandals have gotten to; wearing closed shoes and socks got me all overheated: weird to take off your shoes and have your head cool down and stop pounding.

Of course I woke up at 5am today and found my husband not in bed: he's sleeping in his chair again, which is A-1 Certified NOT GOOD FOR HIS BACK but I'm not likely to cure him of it at this late date: the man is just not likely to suddenly stop staying up all night and napping in chairs.

Anyway, there I was fully awake from the effort of getting him to wake up and come to bed, and Ian started crowing, as is the wont of roosters at or near sunrise. Then there was a sound much like that of a cat when you step on its tail, only Zathras was sound asleep in the chaise: Ian crowed and the creaky squawk answered: either Benny or Bjorn is crowing.

Stereo. Just what I do not actually need. Luckily I ran into an old 4H friend at Freddie's on Saturday, and she may well want one of the boys. I'm pretty sure I'm selling both (although I would also trade for young chickens to be named later). They're the ones I got from Tiff, who had them from Tamara, out of her gorgeous splash rooster and hen. It's just that I have a splash rooster already, and only one Blue hen to two splash hens, and it just seems to me I need to be looking for a blue rooster, or even a black, for the second pen. I'm also looking way forward to putting Ian and three hens in the new run and no longer having to run up and down the hill to feed and water: I'm going to have to move the hoop house somewhere on the same level of the people house before I use it again: the extra twenty-foot change in elevation getting in and out every time I check that residence is a waste of effort I could better use elsewhere.

I have just a few

and they are fun babies!
But mostly the photos are due to so many questions I get since not many in Seattle proper have quails.

They are interesting to have as pets and also make pretty calls so for those who can't have chicken roosters, quails are a option for breeding as well as not annoying the neighbors as much.

They can not free range though and will fly away if loose. I'm sure I've populated my neighborhood a bit by accident

unless I fed the neighbors cats...

I testify to their wonderful calls: I've got two coveys on the place, one down by the corral and one up on the hill, and when they start crowing it's summer.

Looks more lie the first picture. Sure is a cute little thing! Walked right into my friends work, so she brought it to me.

walked in to her work??? as in loose? wild? wow...

I'm not 100% positive but I'd say its a Coturnix (Japanese Quail) but then if it was wild I dunno.... Coturnix are not known for hatching babies... they almost never go broody and almost never stay broody if they do happen to start.

Keep it away from anything not sterile. Chickens carry a virus that is like our common cold that kills quails fast.
They also are known to go "swimming" in the water dish so make sure its shallow and if they can get in they have traction to get out. I use small pebbles in the bottom of a shallow dish/jar lid or a pop bottle waterer.

You might want to make the sides "solid" on 1 corner so it feels safer. and to prevent drafts.

Cute little thing

here is a example of what I use to feed/water in the first3-4 days until they stop trying to "swim"
Its just 2 sauce jar lids I grabbed from the recycle bin

baby is a white button quail (Chinese painted quail or Chinese blue breasted quails depending on whom you ask)
