walked in to her work??? as in loose? wild? wow...
I'm not 100% positive but I'd say its a Coturnix (Japanese Quail) but then if it was wild I dunno.... Coturnix are not known for hatching babies... they almost never go broody and almost never stay broody if they do happen to start.
Keep it away from anything not sterile. Chickens carry a virus that is like our common cold that kills quails fast.
They also are known to go "swimming" in the water dish so make sure its shallow and if they can get in they have traction to get out. I use small pebbles in the bottom of a shallow dish/jar lid or a pop bottle waterer.
You might want to make the sides "solid" on 1 corner so it feels safer. and to prevent drafts.
Cute little thing
Ok so for tonight, I have the littlew one in a modified shrimp trap, now quail brooder. lol But it will work. I have one corner boxed in, a small fuzzy stuffed animal, and a 40W light bulb. My house is currently toasty at 78 degrees, theres a teeny plastic lid with 1/8" of water, and smashed up feed sprinkled on the floor... This will have to do for tonight. Heres hoping for the best. I think if it maes it through the night, then I will try to find a couple more to keep with it. Little one will stay next to my computer up and away from DD's prodding little fingers. lol I'll figure out a better arangement tomorrow, when the feed store is open.
Quail are a ground bird mostly right?
