Little does he know how far in I am.... I am debating about trying to sneak a bird in. He's smart tho, might catch on after a while. He actually pays attention to how many we have and what breeds. There's slugs out everywhere after the rain; I caught a couple dozen and divided them between the Hamburgs and the Wyandottes in the hoop house. When I was out later doing some pruning and cleanup/giving rose treats to Bacchus, Elvis and his hens were nagging me for more slugs- on the other hand Anni-Frid, Bjorn, Benny and Agnetha had freaked out and let all theirs escape, and the two cockerels did exactly what Ian does when I give them live foods over an inch long: freak the heck out and crowd into the corners away from those horrible things. Anyone else experience this distinction?

I am not sure I am willing to do that even for my beloved chickens.

There is commercial frames hanging in the hive body, with the foundation beeswax in them.
No, we have no comb...

I guess I need to find my slug scissors.* It's nuts, though- the Hamburgs are tiny compared to the Wyandottes, but they just peck the slugs apart and eat them; the Wyandottes, and especially the cockerels, just will have nothing to do with anything bigger than the tiny baby slugs.



* You of course know I am not kidding about slug scissors, but for the skeptics: scissors used to cut slugs get all gucked up and it's easier to have a dedicated pair than to clean them sufficiently to cut other stuff.

I've been gardening way too long to have any pity for slugs- especially since all of the ones in my yard are non-native plant shredders.
