Mikeyb - As you learn about and try to decide which chickens to get, don't forget to check out the "other" breeds. Check out the Dark Brown Egg layers. Green/Blue egg layers and also some of the supposedly not typically egg laying chickens. I have a Dark Cornish that was supposed to be a meat chicken who is a great layer, absolutely beautiful feather colors and lays 5 eggs per week of decent size and consistency. I am so glad she accidentally stole my heart!

And I highly recommend that you get some EE's (green egg layers) Hearty funny chickens usually. Mine are laying up a storm this winter. They are so varied in color, size and temperament. But all 4 of mine are wonderful.

My mom has Cuckoo Marans and Welsummers. She is averaging 8 eggs per day from 10 chickens. They are still a little small. But they started laying very early and haven't missed a beat.

Like the Beautiful California White and the Beautiful White leghorn .They both lay amazing WHITE eggs almost every day.

. My white Leghorn layes LOTS of DOUBLE yoke eggs

One thing you will learn as you spend more time here on the Washington page, is NOT TO listen to Weavagraden, NOBODY else does

. She is in trouble with the LAW in Hoquiam for having TOO many chickens.

Ronnie Roo. You shouldn't try to talk this poor new chicken fancier into buying inferior chickens. Why would he want a common white egg layer when he could just buy those in the store? At least tell him the truth about the fact that often the eggs that they lay are in fact false eggs. They look and feel a lot like the real thing, but are made of hardened shell with no real nutritional value. In fact, if I am not mistaken, you just discovered some of those in the nest today.

Mikeb - please use your best judgment. who are you gonna believe. The one who tries to steer you toward more choices, or the one who tries to head you right back to what you could buy every day.

for having TOO many chickens. Yes weaveagarden I did find some wooden eggs in my nest boxes today (my daughter told you what she was going to do huh?) At least she was SMART enough to pick WHITE and not BROWN eggs.

I thought my two new girls ( Iv;e had them 3 weeks,1day) were fitting into the flock pretty good. they would get pecked once in a while but nothing serious. But today when I went out to the coop CL2 (chicken little II) was all Bloody she was bleeding pretty bad from her Comb. and she has a bald spot on her back. I had to get some of that blood stop stuff. she seems ok WHERE is NURSE Kimmy when ya need her?

Well Mike just think about it . Who ya gonna trust yer neighbor who offered to help ya out or Mr. Ron who is way up there by Seattle and is also trying to talk ya into them old common white eggs. No color no character. Trust me I am yer best choice!!
