So I have been concerned. I have had some birds with runny poop...diarrhea. I went through a bad time and lost quite a few birds here awhile back, to cocci, so I am SOOOOOO paranoid. Everybody got their dose of Corrid...but still seeing diarrhea...everyone looks healthy, acting healthy (but birds will do this and then be dead the next day)...so I decided to go and do some research. I found this site with a post from our very own:

It was so very interesting and informational. All of this time I have been worried and their poops are normal. this web site has photos of poop..showing normal and abnormal. My bird's poop has been like this because of the heat. I learned a lot today. Thank you Imp..you posted it in 2009.

I'm about to rush out the door to the theater again. It's our last of dress rehearsal and then tomorrow night is the FREE preview. So if any of you enjoy live theater but find it too pricey, I'm inviting you to come see The 25th Annual Spelling Bee of Putnam County at Tacoma Little Theater. Show starts at 7:30. It's very funny, lots of talented actors, singers and did I mention it's FREE?

Okay, back to chick chat. I just checked on the broody. Couldn't see or hear a thing so - I urged her to move a little and lo and behold - I hear cheeping underneath her and sure enough there's 2 little chipmunk babies! She got up, had a drink, clucked a few times and went back to her nest. The chicks were having a hard time getting back into the nest with her so I helped them and they snuggled in under her big fluffy body. She is determined to hatch that last egg under her.

I went to the incubator, still only saw 4 chicks and figured, what the heck. I took them down to the broody's nest and tucked them in under her. She took them easily and after I watched for several minutes, everyone was quieted down and comfy under her warm body.
I picked up the remaining egg in the incubator and tapped on it. It tapped back!

So I quickly added more water to the incubator and as I was doing so, that egg was rocking and rolling in my hand. It's back in the incubator. Hopefully I was quick enough to not lose all the humidity. I think that egg wants to hatch in a big way.

Who knows? We may end up with 100% hatch. We've got 6 out of 8 so far!

obviously your broody will need to be watched carefully if she is ever sitting on eggs that REALLY MATTER to you; but here's hoping that she is a good MAMA once they're all hatched and tucked under her

Well it seems that I underestimated her. I don't think she tossed those eggs out after all. When I was down there fussing with her and the chicks just now I saw her try to get into her nest and as she stepped on the edge of it, it tipped and everything wanted to come spilling out. I've changed to a wooden next box now instead of the lightweight kitty litter box which usually is fine because it sits in a nest box frame. Poor Whitey. I blamed her when it was my mistake. She would have hatched those eggs all by herself if they hadn't fallen out.

yes ... but you must admit you had great fun watching those incubator chickies hatch and bounce around !

since Yelm has rocks, LOTS of rocks, I put a couple of small-but-heavy rocks in the corners of the nest boxes, so the hens wouldn't bounce the boxes around, and the roo wouldn't move them when he pokes his head in to ascertain that all is well

I am really CHUFFED about the great hatch rate so far ...

Well, I've been having my woolly weed-whacker clean up around the hoop house, and he's uncovered a ton of grass tunnels, with two hidden entrances into the coop. So one of the things I did with the hired help today is get the smaller Rat Zapper up and running and baited with anise-scented (a Gerald Durrell standard) poultry feed. We shall see, no?

She's going in on the 6th of September for an echo-cardiogram. She had one when I was pregnant with her which looked normal but they are going to do another one just to check.
