Yeah...but I'd have to run it quite a ways...and figure out how to drive around/over/under it....but at this point it would be worth it to see him bite down on a hot wire!

You can see in these pics how far away the fence is (you can see the horse shelter in the background):

My coop does not have electricity in it but at the pole next to the round pen so I run an extension cord from there and into the coop.

You'll need to get a pet electric fence. A horse electric fence is more powerful & could hurt a dog. We ran hotwire around our coop. Now our chickens run around the yard with the dogs, no problems. My dogs do love scraps even if they have already had their dinner, they are never full. I haven't had to have my hotwire on for a long time. Did have to turn it on when my mom's Aussie was over & broke out of the front yard to the back yard. Had a baby chick down playing with it like a squeak toy. Got him in the house while I rounded up my chickens & locked them in the coop. I turned on the hotwire...he has huge respect of hotwire when he got zapped by a lhama fence. So our wire was set at a level for our small dogs, Jack Russell & 14 inch sheltie. So the Aussie was still dancing around the coop, I had to be mean & push his nose down to it. Wow did he scream, jump high in the air & raced to the glass door trying to climb through the door. I think he got the hint not to hurt or play with my chickens lol.

Shannon

He's gotten zapped a few times with the horse fence...he's over 100lbs and has extremely thick fur. I've seen him standing & touching the fence with his fur and not even reacting. We have a solar charger (horse) around the dog kennel because the Borzoi I used to have would climb out. The horse zapper was the only thing that kept him in. LOL

Sorry- I'll go weed it, I can't remember that one of the ways this place is different than the other BBS I've used is that there's a message limit.

I think she was "looking" for someone to tell her that they were as crazy as she was and had eggs in the incubator. Therefore she would not be alone in this venture.

Was reading about ventilation this morning. They said one needs a square foot of ventilation per chicken! That's a lot of ventilation. I got out the drill and doubled the number of ventilation holes in my coops. It's probably not a square foot per chicken, but it's better.

my fertile eggs got lonely, since the gal I was saving them for, decided not to hatch any eggs right now

so I gave a couple dozen of them to my good neighbor who had given me his no-longer-used coop

(delivered it too, but that was relatively easy, he has a lawn mower/tractor with a scoop, and he is right next door)

we COULD have simply rolled it over, using those rounded landscape timbers I have, but it was nicer to have the tractor do almost all the work

we did walk the chicken tractor over, the four of us ... not all that heavy -- I didn't like the design of it, so we later disassembled it, made our own out of PVC;
the remnants of Sarge's chicken tractor will wind up as the winter roof for the chicken run and part of the mods to the crate-coop

Roxy the new dog, also seems to have some skin issues, she keeps scratching and she has some "hot spots", so I've been adding an egg to her food, to give her a bit of extra complete protein

I'm not sure this Costco dog food is all that great, she sure produces some big PILES out in the yard -- we were spoiled by Jake who ate NutroMax and left cat-sized piles even though he was a much bigger dog (shepherd/black lab mix ?) than she is -- I can pick Roxy up, I could NOT pick up Jake .. and I can pick up a bag of sand (60 pounds), dogfood (40 pounds) or kittylitter (50)

I may run down to one of the feed stores, see if they carry the Nutro in a wheatless version ... I think the nearest Trader Joe's is way up in Federal Way

No, westside Oly next to Barnes and Noble on Black Lake Blvd. Or, from Yelm, probably University Place is closer- out at the end of Bridgeport Way, basically, Bridgeport and Custer. I keep hoping they're going to put one in Lacey but they say the floor rent is too high.

Having failed as usual to finish what I wanted to finish today, I must go pick up a prescription at Group Health and then go to Trader Joe's to get my usual list of things that are cheaper there.

Also, Candy, when I was in your car did I leave my sunglasses behind? I can't find my favorite pair and am left with the assorted failure-to-be-my-favorite-paie ones which all have serious flaws pf some sort.

I'll have to wait until DH gets back from Portland, he has the car we were in .... as far as I know, there aren't any sunglasses in it (I had to search the car to find his checkbook and cellphone), but I could have missed them

you might also check with Dana to see if they wound up at the wine shop

either way, thirty to forty miles away, and pretty close to an hour's drive each way ... unless traffic is unusually light ... longer than I would want to leave this dog unattended

it's usually nice to live "out in the country", but it can be frustrating when the local stores don't carry the things I want
