my stepdaughter had the right idea for warming up a cold house, though it's kind of "hippie" looking

they hung crib sized quilts at the windows, with velcro patches so these could be secured over them at night

then hung blankets (handwoven), rugs, or quilts in every doorway

piled rugs and cushions several layers deep on the sawn-log-and-concrete floor

they were living in a totally uninsulated, cobbled together, ex-artist's-studio, with only three layers of heavy plastic for a "roof"

they had a couple of chipmunks living within that roof ....

heat was from a corner fireplace built of concrete and stacked round stones

using her idea (procrastinating as usual) -- I have a quilt partly made which will grace the bed during the day; it will have a long dowel sewn into one side, and will hang from brackets mounted on either side of our sliding balcony door, at night, and cut the heat loss from that cold north exposure (though there isn't much, our low-e argon windows have held up great)

If that's so, shouldn't it been checked if I were actually offended- which I wasn't. Since this is a poultry forum, I wasn't oblivious to the fact that some people may think of a duck at first thought. Ugh!

CL, can you call Rob to see if he'll come back & play?

We're neighbors! I live in University Place! What kind of chickens do you have?

I think I agree with Illia, but alot of breeds, most breeds, the hens feather much faster, and evenly.
Evenly is the key here, so first, and secondary wings feathers & tails all going at once.
Cockerals can be fluff for what seems like forever..then get wings, but remain tailess & all but bare fluff on their backs.
I think you have a girlie and a lil boy there.

that is kind of what I was thinking. If the short feathered ones are male...then I have 3 cockerels and 2 pullets. I will need to rehome 1 cockerel (maybe)...but everyone else will be staying.

Did CR get reprimanded by BYC? I better not say any more I will get in trouble.

How are you doing? how is the baby?

PPP- Hope you and baby are doing well! I am going to call Rob tomorrow and see what's going on.

Has anyone ever heard of a hen staggering or walking like she 's drunk during a hard molt? 2 of mine are and after a lot of researching on BYC I have found that this happens periodically. Any thoughts? I am now giving them foods with higher protein and Avia Charge in their water. They are in the dog crate and not really happy with me. Going to watch them for the next couple of days.

I just read about something like that... but not remembering which it fell under.....
look for yourself. this is one of the best educational references (first found it in book form at WSU library)
http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/toc_200000.htm
it covers more than your average chicken book.... yet is still generalized but with diagnosis and control tactics.

Nope.. there are a published set of rules, you see the link near the top left corner of your page. If you violate one of those rules, and the "report" link on your post is clicked, then a Mod will come and take a look. If, in the Mod's opinion, the reported post violates one of the published rules, they have the option to issue 'warning points'. If you get too many WPs, you probably get banned or some other such deserving reward.

I've not seen it. I'm trying not to buy from countries where we have a huge trade imbalance with (eliminates Mexico and Canada as well). Sometimes it is impossible to avoid it, but I'm hoping that by trying my best to buy American we will keep more of our dollars in our country, support our citizens and hopefully improve our economy. I had not looked at it from a health point of view. Now I'm afraid to - Olivia and her friends had rooster feathers put in their hair on Sunday and they did not come from our yard.

I skin, stretch the hide skin side up on a styrofoam board, stretch with quilt pins, then salt & borax.
Ya'll didn't know the Chickielady took Taxodermy classes??????
Yup..and I have threatened to stuff the best parts of DH when he goes!

You crack me up!

And how much salt and borax on the skin?
How long do you leave it pinned out?
Do you just let it dry there and your done?
Or is there other steps involved?

This kind of thing has always been interesting to me!
