Well my serama baby was sure getting snuggly and lovey. He/she (named Bumble) was quite comfortable. Would make for a nice house chicken pet.

Yeah, interrupting air flow is a big part of being able to keep the house warm; I need to replace the curtain that shuts the hallway off from the rest of the house, the dogs have totally trashed it.

You crack me up!

And how much salt and borax on the skin?
How long do you leave it pinned out?
Do you just let it dry there and your done?
Or is there other steps involved?

This kind of thing has always been interesting to me!

dunno about salt-tanning chicken hides, but I did tan the opossom that we dispatched on our deck

I have tanned deer and elk hides too (more elaborate procedure, also depends if you want the hair on, or off)

I'll let CL tell you how SHE did it ... I just rubbed on, rubbed in, enough salt that there was still some in granular form, on the surface
then when all the salt seemed to have been absorbed, but the skin was still flexible, I put more on ... left it pinned until it was hard and dry

after it stayed dry for a week, because I wanted to use it as a table mat, I rubbed it, bare skin side down, over a rounded log until it was flexible; rubbed some neatsfoot oil on it to keep it soft

That just sounds so easy! lol

If that's so, shouldn't it been checked if I were actually offended- which I wasn't. Since this is a poultry forum, I wasn't oblivious to the fact that some people may think of a duck at first thought. Ugh!

CL, can you call Rob to see if he'll come back & play?

Did CR get reprimanded by BYC? I better not say any more I will get in trouble.

How are you doing? how is the baby?

I talked to him over & over and he will not tell me his issues.
So, after making me at guessing his problem, I have decided that HE IS A BIG BOY and he will log back on when he wants to do so.

You DO have to PIN the hide out, stretch it in every direction and pin it, or it will shrink shrinvle as it dries, and then let it dry,,fan on it is helpful

Good job Candy!!
Borax is best as it does not attract more mositure as salt does;)
It is available in every fishing dept store as we all use it to cure roe & hides;)

Tanning is different than curing, a bird only needs to be cured, as in rubbed with borax.
A hide from a mammal has to be tanned, rubbed on a wooden support, fat removed, and usually cured with one of 2 chemicals to either leave on hair, or remove hair.
