Hi Christina,

I am part of the Seattle Urban Farm Co-op and we do a group order of 2 brands of feed. One is the standard over here from In Season Farms Ltd 27831 Huntingdon Rd Abbotsford, B.C. V4X 1B6 Phone: 604-857-5781. This is what we all used for a long time and never had any problems, to my knowledge. The ingredient list for the ISF organic blend is Wheat, Barley, Rye, Peas, Lentils, Soy Meal, Flax Meal, Sunflower Meal, Lysine, Methionine, Phytase, Vitamins, Calcium, Salt, Choline and Rock Phosphate. It is a bit chopped up and probably better for weaker birds as it is very easy to digest. We have, many of us, recently switched to an organic and locally sourced feed from Scratch and Peck run by Diana in Bremerton. She is a great person and really believes in what she is doing. You can call her at 360-981-8597 or email her at [email protected]. Her feed is much more whole grain and is great for the chickens. It must make them work harder for it, but they love it. Her feed contains wheat, barley, oats, peas, organic corn, whole sunflower seeds, fish meal, kelp, nutritional yeast, vitamins and minerals. You can see the oyster shell in it, as well.

I would recommend either of these two, but I would like to hear what others have to say!

Aaron

Purina Game Bird Startena - 30% protein, non medicated. I'm feeding it to my quail right now, will be feeding it to my turkeys when they get here. I got it at Everett Co-Op. That's quite a hike for you, but I'm sure any Purina dealer could get it.

Thats what I feed my Quail too I got it at the same place, but I am pretty sure they all sell it.

Went to the book store last night and grabbed a book on chickens and just started reading. After reading the chapter on Diseases

I'm SURE my flock has EVERY disease there is

. I keep a pretty clean coop and run but wild birds do get in from time to time.. My main concern is (1) mites (2) lice (3) worms. Anybody have problems with these???? I have checked several of my girls and don't really see anything on them. some of their feathers are so thick its hard to get a good look at their skin. I don't see anything in the coop or on the roost. My egg production isn't really down either. I get 6/7 out of 8 every day. they do dust themselfs alot in the dirt under the barn. I guess I'm just trying to be careful and ward off anything before it gets out of hand.

I do have a golden sexlink that hasn't laid an egg in 21 days.

She doesn't seem normal but really doesn't seem real sick either. She stays to herself alot and walks around slowly. but she does eat and if I show her mealworms she comes running 100MPH. she doesn't seem to poop alot. I don't think she is egg bound because going that long without laying would kill her wouldn't it??? She was one of my best layers until she stopped. She is 11 months old. Idea's ????????????????

I would have to say if your birds do not have lice or mites you may want to put down some D-Earth in there bathing area.
That would help them in the long run.
As far as making a chicken lay, I still am having a hard time with that one, Did you try squeezing her?
Sorry I wish I knew, I believe the diatomaceous earth is food grade and helps rid birds of worms too.
You probibly already thought of all this anyway though. Just putting it out there.

Yea, I worked for Dr's for 30 years... we always told pt.s not to look @ medical texts... they would come out with everything"in the book".
Do you inspect your birds regularly?..And is your GSL have a "special place" to lay eggs ( i only say that because I just found a EE nest in the wood pile... she's grounded

) They best way to ease your mind is a hands on approach. Take someone out to hold your girlie. Then check her out from beak to feet . If you find something suspect, then look @ the book and talk to BYCers. Good Luck and have fun

I hardly ever go to the doctor though !!! and we are all still kicking

I have been missing ONE brown egg for the last 21 days. I have been putting my GSL in a coop by herself or with one that lays white eggs for the last week. Nothing

I do let her out to run in the afternoon with the rest of the flock. she stays to herself. I watch her close, so I don't think she is laying one out in the yard anywhere. she wasn't one of my favorites( she was mean) but she is becoming one now. I feel sorry for her

I have some Food grade D.E. . The chickens dust under the barn, I can get some in there. they also dust alot when they free range. I use to have a spot inside the barn in the coop for them. I think I will build another one. My daughter and I are going to look over the girls tonight after dark
I'm going to "PM" you
