My favorite Polish rooster- George- age 5, has got some super long spurs on him. Despite me trimming them once a year or so, they were long enough to catch and hobble him from time to time. With a sigh, I went to clip them with the dog nail clippers again. They were too tough, so I turned them over to son Rob. He must have twisted a bit, because off came the whole spur with nary a drop of blood. Great! I know that's what people do all the time, but I thought it would be messier. So he did it on the other spur. Now he has neat pretty little nail beds to regrow spurs on. Since the ones we took off were about 2.5 inches long, it ought to take a while. Worth trying if you've been worried about an older bird with really long spurs. Our club newsletter recommends stabbing the spur into a hot potato for about a minute to loosen them up, but these came off easily without that.

My mousie does that every once in awhile, it means that I need to replace the batteries again.

I just never remember to turn it off at night. Which of course is why I belong to the forgetfulness thread.

I havnt closed my coop in so long... I believe the last time I closed it was when I first put the flock in there. And that was just so they would figure out that THAT was home and not the old coop. Now though, I leave it open, but it is completely surounded and covered in wire, with an 18" apron run along the outside. Plus Chickieladys pokey no climb barbs! I havn't had an issue yet. Now when our temps really dip below freezing, say consistantly in the 20's, then I'll close up for the nights. Just to hold some extra heat in.

I have strict rules and close my coops every night, and they have lock bars on them, with thumb clips (like on a horse lead or dog leash) BUT, every so often I think HE has locked them all, and he think I locked them all, and the next morning I go out to unlock coops and find a flock already out & wide awake.........

Not cool!!!!!!!!
The no-dig/no-climb fence was an idea I got from Greg, and it works.
BUT there is always something (a weasel?) that can go right through the 2x4 fence wire lickity-split...so I always LOCK the coops.

Same here, and skunks can dig a very long ways if they get a wiff of young chicks, I lost 15 one night, all their little bodies just laying around the next morning.

Near Haiku - It is an organic working farm with papaya, star fruit, and hives for honey and they also make marmelade there! I hear the road out to there is very remote and goes through some gorgeous tropical forests. I also heard you want to rent a 4WD! Pahana Farms if you do a web search.

Initially we wanted to go Spring break in early April as Don turns 50 on March 28. But then I looked at air fare

After what we spent at the auction there is no room left on the card for plane tickets! I think we will go early July as our 15th anniversary will be July 4, and Olivia will turn 11 that same day.

Too bad we won't be there the same time! I would love to spend some time with you. What would you recommend seeing/doing? My DH and both kids are terrified of crowds.
