We're dealing with red mites here, as well. Not sure where the heck they came from, but so far its only on two of our bantam cockerels. The ladies are all fine, so we're keeping them together for now.

Each is being treated with oil mixed with Tea Tree Oil, got a magnificent bite from one of them for my tender care, too. Both will be treated again +10 days from first application.

We're also sprinkling DE about the pen and the birds. Next up will be Ivermectin on payday. We're also setting up new dust baths with sand and DE for the chickens, so they can self-administer.

I've got a broody hen in that pen that I'm keeping a good eye on. I may have to move her and treat her prophylacticly.

Good luck!

Ok I just thought I would share this from the show cat. For anybody who needs directions to the show ! ! !

From the North• Take second Centralia Exit #81, Mellen Street. Turn Left
under the overpass and drive approximately six blocks to the
second stop light.
• Turn right on Pearl Street (one-way street going south).
• Cross over the viaduct and Pearl Street turns into Gold
Street.
• Proceed south on Gold Street, and it turns into National
Avenue.
• You will see the fairgrounds on the right side. Enter on the
South Gate Entrance.

From the South• Take the third Chehalis Exit #79, Chamber Way. Turn right
off the exit onto Chamber Way.
• Go to the second stop light and turn left onto National
Avenue, which is a one-way street going north. National
Avenue turns into Kresky Avenue.
• For the South Entrance and South Parking Lot, turn left on
Exhibitor Road.
• Turn left at the next stop sign onto National Avenue. You
will want to get into the right lane immediately for the fair
office or the South Parking Lot.

I am going to post it here for all, and PM you as well.

I assume you are doing a hard-feathered bird?

BEFORE YOU BATHE A WHITE BIRD: Trim toenails (nothing worse than ruining a perfect bathing job when you accidentally nick the quik of a white bird) and trim the beak. Use a nailfile to slightly round the edges to look natural. For trimming the beaks I use a toenail clipper. If anyone wants a demonstration of how to trim the beaks I can show you at the show. Even the largest large fowl can be trimmed with a toenail clipper.

To get hard stains out use Tide with colorsafe bleach. There is also a stain booster they sell that looks like laundry detergent- it is called something like "stain remover and color booster" which also works well. I give it time to work.

As far as shampooing, I like to use flea and tick shampoo if there is any evidence of mites. Otherwise a whitening shampoo made for dogs or any all-purpose shampoo. I bathe mine in the sink so I don't do the bucket method. Because I show silkies, my birds also get blow dried (for extra fluff). Otherwise just gentle toweling and air drying in a warm place.

With my SLW when I do show them I place them on my grooming table with the sheep dryer blowing on them gently in the direction of the feathers.

When you bathe, also use the time to take a toothbrush to gently scrub the legs and comb, use a toothpick to pick gunk from the nostrils if there is any (I'm not talking infectious copious boogers, just normal buildup), and put a little bit of oil on the comb and beak.

Voila! Keeping them clean is half the battle. With silkies I have the luxury of doing whites a couple of days prior to show, with hard feathered birds they need more time to regain feather oils. See you there!

That is why I was asking about that feather sheen spray I so a few people why at the last show.....The dark birds will not get a total bath, they are fantastic as it but for comb & legs, maybe a butt fluff.
The white one, however, is gonna need a lot more..
OK I will go get some of the tide for her.....
All these I am bringing are 5-6 mo old and have fine nails & beaks & spurs..all very nice.
Just still wondered about the feather sheen restorer spray I have seen....
