They were gone by the time I was in high school, I know, and good riddance.
Good woodstoves are less of a problem than badly maintained deisel trucks, and there are a LOT more of the latter. Bad woodstoves are slowly disappearing: now if we could just teach people how to build good fires.

Good woodstoves are less of a problem than badly maintained deisel trucks, and there are a LOT more of the latter. Bad woodstoves are slowly disappearing: now if we could just teach people how to build good fires.

This is what they looked like unlit; the Museum of Glass in Tacoma was designed to resemble them.
This wikipedia article has a good photo of a lit one smoking up the sky in daytime.
When they were lit and burning hot the whole top glowed red; in stagnant air they smoldered and smoked and stank. Some of them had steam plants adjacent to them to power remote sawmills, although that was way before my time; mostly they were just a way to get rid of saw mill waste in the days when there was actually such a thing.
