Used to be much worse- ever come down off White Pass into Packwood when the hog fuel burners were going full on? Beautiful sparkling clear air up top, nearly unbreathable below 500 feet.

Can't say as I have. Wig waum burners were well before my time.

No way! you're an old fart! Of course, I wouldn't have a clue what those burners are.

They were gone by the time I was in high school, I know, and good riddance.

Good woodstoves are less of a problem than badly maintained deisel trucks, and there are a LOT more of the latter. Bad woodstoves are slowly disappearing: now if we could just teach people how to build good fires.

This is what they looked like unlit; the Museum of Glass in Tacoma was designed to resemble them.

This wikipedia article has a good photo of a lit one smoking up the sky in daytime.

When they were lit and burning hot the whole top glowed red; in stagnant air they smoldered and smoked and stank. Some of them had steam plants adjacent to them to power remote sawmills, although that was way before my time; mostly they were just a way to get rid of saw mill waste in the days when there was actually such a thing.

not really true... high pressure with warm air up high, traps the colder air and it just sits there. no wind as others have pointed out, but its not caused by wood burning stoves or diesel trucks... when the air doesnt move it does of course cause bad air to just sit over the top of us. was just watching the news and Kimberly Clark in Everett will close down for good Jan 1st. 700 to lose their jobs at the mill, many more that supplied the mill with services. they burned hog fuel, powered their plant. I used to haul it in there. sad...
