Yeah, poor Punkin has a bad 'do. Not my fault though! Although I did cut my silkie 'roos top knot. He got too curious while I was shaving the dogs down, so I shaped him up too

I'm vicious with the scissors.

We lost one Narragansett last night, I was worried about the poor dear anyway, as it seemed very lethargic from the start. So far though, the rest seem to be very healthy. I even saw the turkeys eat something!

Lockdown on my Coturnix has begun. Random candling revealed only 3 clear of the ~ 20 that I did.

Then a very quick cleaning of the 'bator to set the turkey eggs that currently reside in the chicken coop on Sunday so that I can set for a weekend hatch.

I seriously need to finish my button cage too. Anyone want a pair of males for pets? I seem to have an abundance of them. They can live happily in an aquarium or something like that, from what I understand, but need to be kept in pairs (gender apparently doesn't matter from what I've read here)

From what I was told at the Snohomish Coop there is a livestock auction also up by lynden supposedly on Mondays.

Does anyone know anything about Cackle Hatchery? They do online sales. I just don't want to end up using someone I might regret

. Or maybe know someone local that specializes in meat birds?

So far we have 3 silver laced wyandottes, 2 gold laced wyandottes, 3 barred rocks, 2 easter eggers, 1 buff orpington, 1 russian orloff, 1 i am not so sure of and then my new Black Maran Roo! Getting more! lol I want to add some True Ameraucanas and a few true Marans. As well as some good meat birds! Getting this farm going again is going to be hard and the last time I had chickens was in Mexico , so there is a big difference so any advice is more than welcomed!

Good morning everyone

I was talking to my friend last night about hatching some quail for her to train her dogs with. She was interested in Chuckar. I looked them up and it is pretty pricey to buy the eggs, so I wanted to know if any of you have them or know of where I can get them locally.
Also if I did have to buy the eggs online would any of you be interested in buying some of the excess? She is only looking for 10 and most places have a min of 50 to 100 eggs.

Supposedly Cackle hatchery is one of the top 3 hatcheries right now. . . But I never trust how people rate them. They rate them by how many chicks arrived alive versus dead.

You looking for True Ameraucanas and good Marans? There's quite a few breeders here of Marans, and a couple for Ameraucanas. I would recommend Cree Farms for both though - They often sell chicks and even sexed chicks, but have GREAT Marans as well as Ameraucanas.

Where is Cree farms?

Seabeck - Near Bremerton. To the rest of you it may be far, but to me it is the closest I can get to any sort of breeder. Their website is creefarm.fateback.com - Lisa Cree is the one who does the selling and talking, and she's great!

All the Marans eggs in my avatar are from their stock, and a large percentage of all my Marans are from them. Also, about half my Ameraucanas are from them as well.

I will definitely look into that! I really would love to eventually be able to go exclusive with Marans and Ameraucanas, they are both so beautiful PLUS combine the two and you get Olive colored eggs

I've always been happy with Cackle. I've had the lowest mortality rate with their birds, their downside is that you can end up waiting awhile to get your order. I placed mine in February and just got it yesterday. My guess is due to the Turkeys. As you can see above, I only lost one, and poults being more fragile in nature, I understand. I did notice they threw in an extra phoenix chick for me though. I've ordered from both McMurray and Ideal, and had much higher mortality and more genetic defects.

That's just my story though. I know other people have had great results with MM and Ideal.

One way of rating them. I also look at the crooked toes, undesirable white feathers (like on my sweet Punkin) and crossed beaks on the birds I have gotten from the others. Their customer service is also second to none. Not that I had problems with Ideal or MM on the customer service aspect, but I think the bulk of any future hatchery dealings I have, will be with Cackle.

ETA: I'd also like to add that all of the chicks I had with all of them arrived alive save 1 which I count as reasonable shipping loss. Its the mortality in the first 24-48 hours I consider more. All chicks were/are brooded in the same conditions, not to mention, the two smallest orders were from Cackle, hence lower body heat. Methinks that says something about the sturdiness of their birds.

My two complaints with Cackle are that you have to order in 5s, and they have less options for sexing.

I also like that they openly state on their site that their Ameracaunas are not necessarily purebred, but are bred for for egg color and feathering, and are advertised as "Easter Egg Chickens"
