Our new Serama chicks from Castle Delights!

One word of warning if you have the Brinsea Brooder and are hatching Serama's. I think they are too small to use this brooder as their only heat source from day 1. I went down there this evening and a couple of them were cheeping their "something is wrong" really loud cheap and they were cold! I had a back up heat lamp hanging over the brooder, but not low enough to keep them warm enough as I assumed the Brinsea Brooder would keep them warm enough. Most standard size chicks would be able to be close enough to the heat source in that to almost touch it. These guys couldn't acutally touch the heat source, were in fact 1-2" away from it. Since it's a radiant heat source, that wasn't good enough! After lowering the regular brooder lamp and warming them all up, they have been fine.

Thank you for this info. I will watch mine. They are in my basement, which is where my furnace is at and it is a nice stable maintained warm down there. I have 24 of Laura's eggs in right now and also I stuck 12 of my black orp eggs in to check if any fertility. I figured worse case scenerio with the orp eggs is that they would work as god hot water bottles...kind of help keep the heat even in there. All the serama eggs are in the middle as this seems to be where it is warmest. I was also concerned about the temp and I placed 2 other thermometers in there to watch it.....all seems to be working good right now, other than my auto rotator died...not the arm it is something internal that the DH has tried to explain to me. I don't understand.

Some of our English Orps, pic's taken last week:

Our blue cockerel Sterling, with all of our girls.

Our 3 blue girls. Penelope on the left is Sterling's mom, and the other two blue girls are her daughters.

Baxter is our main man in this flock and also Sterling and the two blue girls Daddy.

One of the new blue pullets has started laying! We got our first pullet egg from their coop this week!

I Looooove them! I just really go wild for this breed. My husband even like's them. ( he's the kind of guy who say its a bird or its a goat , but when something happens he's the first one to them to help them out. He's a sweetheart)
I have to get my splash laying I so want some eggs.

yaaaay pics!!! really nice!! he looks really good, glad you like him. I had a rooster here that would follow me like a dog, he would beat me to the man door of the barn and stand and wait for me to open it. look up at me like,. hurry up!!!

I know its wild, the Black one I got from RS he's the same way, he and his girls follow us every place, thats why I just love this breed.. Dont get me wrong our other birds do to just not like them..

I used colored zip ties from Harbor Freight -- they are DURABLE --- several of the pullets didn't like them to begin with, and pecked at them, they stayed on (I had previously tried some plastic spiral key rings and those disappeared within days

When you use the zip ties you have to keep a close watch on them, the birds grow fast and you dont want to loose a leg. I use both the zip ties and the sprial bands. We have a feed store that has them. If you cant find any let me know they would be easy to mail.

Trying hard to get moving/keep moving today: spent way too much of yesterday lifting more than I should and my hips are killing me.

On the other hand, I haven't done a full-dose NSAID day since I stopped eating peanutbutter for breakfast and had my GI problems vanish, so here goes!

Okay wanted to share a photo. DH had just finished a bowl of cereal and there was some milk with cereal goodies in the bottom. I gave it to Bumble to have a few mouthfuls. Here you can see that Pica (the dog) really would like her share - the dog did not get any, she gets enough treats...but I thought it was a funny photo.

That is so cute...

Trying to post this mornin, quoting others, is not working "for me" anyways. So I will stop trying, WA4-H Poultrymom posted some pictures of her English Orpingtons, oh my goodness those are some lovely birds. Simply adore them.

As for the farm this mornin, oh a bit blowy out there. Being we have (within no more than 2 miles) have water on 3 sides of our property, and no trees really, it gets a tad blowy here at times. Hard to walk out there this morning.

Have a great Sunday!
