I tried to make a Buche de Noel (Yule Log) for the holidays from a recipe my mom brought from Holland when she moved here. We had it every Christmas, but that is the only time she would make it as it takes 8 hours (not including the decorating) over 2-3 days to make the thing. There are 18 eggs in this cake (mostly just the whites) and almost no flour.

Mine did not look much like a log, so I called it a forest floor cake:

She used to make another cake that looks a lot like that ring you ahve there, but with almond paste in it. We used to pick the almonds, blanch them, and mix them with other stuff (mostly sugar I think) to mae a very yummy marzipan that we would put in it. I did not want to go through all that work, so I bought a giant can of Blue Diamond almond paste. Almond paste must be different than Marzipan. we interchanged the names all the time, but the stuff in my can is stiff, dry and flavorless. I decided not to make the cake when I took a taste of the paste.

Ogress, that is gorgeous! Almost too pretty to eat. :)
Totalcolour, I loved your dessert also.

I find I am quite fond of Richard Ho'opi'i .. my cottage tenant sometimes accompanies him ... if you love Hawaiian music I can get you tons of tapes, they show up quite regularly in the Kula Hospital thrift store ... or perhaps I can talk to Mary and get her & her group to record some stuff for me
I will have to look him up.
A couple of my favorites are Keali'i Reichel and Pekelo, and for goofy island humor, Frank de Lima and Bula'ia.

here's a link to the Wikipedia article on "Iz", who is/was a person, rather than a group, though he did often have backup musicians
I think his surname translates as something like "child without sorrows"; my Hawaiian dictionary has gone walkabout so I can't confirm that

Don't know if this has already been posted (trying to catch up) but Iz did one of THE most beautiful renditions of Over the Rainbow I've ever heard...

On another topic - CALIFORNIA SUITE has gotten a couple of very nice reviews in local papers already and audiences are really enjoying the show. Here is our first review - someone you might know has gotten a little mention...

"A force all her own" and not to be upstaged! That's pretty awesome. Congrats, Sadie Sue!

If I'm using my dictionary correctly, I've got Kama (child) and Wio'ole (fearless, brave, courageous)
Love Iz, and the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His song "In Dis Life" was what we played for our wedding.

This, for FlyRobinFly:

Is this enough, or ya want more ?
Sorry my older OEs just are not laying very often, but the younger onees are.
Two flavours OE shown here, one Marans (a dark brown egg layer)xAmeracauna (the dark olive egg) and the many light green eggs are Rock (a light brown layer) x Ameracauna, producing a lighter green egg.
I love OEs !
Oh and the dark brown are your BCM pullet, the light brown /speckled are Rocks.

Thanks Chickie, these are great!

If you get any other shades/colors in the meantime I'd be happy to take those too.
In case anyone's wondering, I'm collecting different colored eggs to make a wreath. They will be blown out and just the shells used, so they don't need to be fertile or even edible. I have some from Justbugged and Chickie's saving for me, but if anyone else has pretty colors, I'd love to buy/trade some from you!

Dawn

So much going on today! Congrats on the beautiful chicks - all of them! So sorry about the chicks and the girl that passed - that hurts. The eggs are beautiful - as are the desserts, which look absolutely sublime! That widow-maker - yikes! I LOVE Hawaiian music, but more traditional - I've spent some time on Maui and really love it there. And great news on the great theater reviews!
I hope I got everyone - gotta go make dinner now!
