Ok I am frustrated. I emailed a guy on craigslist that had 4 polish hens for 50.00. I emailed him 5 minutes after he placed the ad. He never responded then to top it off he removed the ad.

I have been trying to get polish forever!! I am really sad. I wish they would at least email and say they are gone or something not just leaving me hanging!!!

Ok so is anyone else having a problem with their chickens coughing and sneezing? Only a couple have been doing this. I have been putting them on antibiotics but it does not seem to make it go away. They are perfectly happy and are laying but just have a cough and sneeze. Now one of my chicks has it as well.....anyone else have this problem? I talked to some people at the feed store and they said they are experiencing the same...any suggestions would be nice...

Have a great and wonderful sunny weekend!!!

Odd start to the day....... Finally luck came my way and I scored a sweet antique box for free...to be converted into my second coop, my Hunny is actually helping out today!!! We are sectioning off the one huge run into 4 smaller ones. One for the majority of my chickens, A pen for the turkeys, one for my Marans and one for my Welsumers!

Took Breakfast (our lamb) in yesterday... My little girl figured out this morning that Breakfast was going to now become "dinner", she wasn't too happy. She cried saying "we're going to eat Breakfast like Chopper (our boxer) ate Sunshine (her chicken)". I tried so hard not to laugh but the irony of it all consumed me!

Well, I hope all of you are having a great weekend before the rain returns!

My hens sneeze every so often, all year round just as you and I do.
They can have something that tickes their noses, or pollens they are allergic too, just as us and does not necessarily mean they have disease.
My Granny had a weaner dog that was deathly allergic to toads....and he had to be patrolled in the evenings when he was in the yard doing his 'business' cuz he wanted to go off 'nosing' toads to make them jump and he would swell up, eyes swell shut, sneeze and sneeze !!!

What you watch for is exudate from the nose, hoarse coughing, wheezing or rails (a gurgling when breathing) also swollen eyes, droopy, listless "unthrifty" birds, then, something is wrong.
This is my experience.

Well" Intro to Freezer Camp" went fairly well today. I think that we took care of 12 birds today. They were more than ready to process. They are dressing out between 4 and 6 pounds. We had one BYC member come over with his 6 or 7 year old daughter and they seemed to pick up some tips about taking care of the birds. His daughter was really a trouper she was very interested in how things were done. I think that she learned a bit when the guts came out. I sent her home with a green egg and a dark Marans. She was delighted as they left. There are 14 birds left to process in the next week or two.

On a sad note yesterday I bought a big bunny that I was hoping to make into a pet for the family. Well when Chipper met up with the bunny, the bunny freaked out and somehow managed to paralyze its hind end. He couldn't control his bladder or bowels. I tucked him into the greenhouse where he could hide from all of the dogs. I was hoping that he was just hysterical, and would be fine in the morning. Well he wasn't better today. We talked about a number of options for the bunny, but in the end it was reasonable to send him to freezer camp also. My tough macho son was in tears after he did the deed. I felt so bad for everyone. It seems that I don't seem to be fated to have a pet bunny right now. DH is saying no more bunnies. Uff DA! I still want to find the right bunny for my family, but it is going to be a while before I can think about sneaking one in again. I had even named the bunny. I am rather sad at the outcome.

Another beautiful Saturday!! Another big ducky day!! My Blacks are getting the most beautiful green feathers on their wings!!! The neighbors are in love!!!

justbugged,
So sorry Christina that you lost your bunny. That's always tough.

crazychickenlover,
Michelle, I've been noticing on the forums that the "cold" is being posted more. I think it's cyclical. I'm not having it now, but in the past I've thrown everything at it. If it seems to be spreading can you seperate? Good luck

Ugh! It's Sunday already! I spent the last days "hunting" rooster....if you want the story it's under "runaway roosters" in managing your flock. I got them! Last night was sleepover night. I've got 4 kids of my own and they had 2 friends stay over and up all night....and my husband's been out of town the whole time. Today was going to be the day I sat and relaxed and watched the new pool fill up, but the house is destroyed!!! Spilled bacon grease from the griddle on the counter with a million packages for a million different kinds of food, 6 sleeping bags, pillows, etc on the living room floor, not to mention all the crumbs from the treats......everything everywhere! And it's not one of those jobs I can have the kids fix. I'm going to have to get down to the nitty gritty. Today is supposed to be relaxing!

On the happy note I have an order from Ideal shipping tomorrow!!!! Woohoo!

i just read back thru several pages to catch up!

Congrat's on all the new babies out there..
I candled my cochin eggs--which I wasn't sure if they were going to be fertile or not--you know how cochins are--and it looks like they are!! Woot!

T Hi--you babies are getting so big! holy cow!

well i am back to no chicks hatched. i went and checked on it and the hen and it was gone. there was no sign of it even existing except for the fact there is one egg less so i wasn't imagining things.

i even picked the hen up and shook it to see if it was hiding under its feathers. nothing. if it had somehow gotten out of the pen the other chickens would of eaten it but there is no sign of chick feathers anywhere.

mom asked me if the momma hen could of ate it.

could a broody hen eat its own chick???

i was so sad i wanted to show john (my bf) it because it was the lucky one that hatched from eggs i considered dead.

i mean people freak out on the boards here if the temp in their brooder drops or spikes for hours. these 8 eggs were wet and cold for 2 days (the broody quit sitting). so i put them under the new broody coshin....

it was so cute and fit in the palm of my hand!!!!

what should i do if others hatch? remove them and put them in a brooder??
