hey guys ! I been busy all day cleaning coops & pens and have the massive hatch today, not only my 5 doz eggs in the incubator but also 3 lovely broody hens, 2 Buckeye & 1 Java have peeps !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pips still ongoing.....watching the broodies this morning I herad the tiniest muffled peeping & then a little yellow face looked out from under Mommie hen !!!!!!!!!!!

So...I is busy !

Some one please tell me to stay our of the Bator.... I came home from shopping all day and the temp was down to 97. I want sooo bad to open it up and make sure they are ok. Our furnace is out and I had a small heater in there and I think my husband turned it down.

OK so UPDATE on my first hatch of B RIR. So far they all look the same. They seem to be sloppy eaters. See they all have a white streak down their neck and breast. I am sure it must be Silky milk from their (broody) mom.

How's folks Spring projects going? We've finished our three West Wing pens and are working on securing the raptor netting for the East Wing pens (another three). Our friends are sure getting tired of being asked to help us bury fencing!

The Silkie chicks are doing marvelously, though sales have slowed down for now. The Lavender Orpingtons are growing huge. And our beautiful Flemish Giant bunny is growing in leaps and bound, we can't wait until she's large enough to find a male - that's another 7 or so months away, though.

Meanwhile, we've begun mealworm breeding and are gearing up to begin growing our own fodder. Purina is making too much money from us!

Can't wait to get that started. Now we just need local bulk organic seed sources.

My mother is tired of hearing about our little hobby farm and likely still wondering how they managed to switch babies at the hospital and where her nice, New England genteel daughter is.

Our baby chicks are still managing to stay in their cardboard-and-duct-taped brooder. One part had to cordoned (or should I say "duct-taped"?) off to place a lonely, pecked bonus sultan who is all feather shafts and no spare fluff to hide his pink skin. Had to duct tape some chicken wire over the top of his section, he kept flying back in with his buds. I almost think he's picking at himself. The sides of the "brooder" are squashed from the girls leaning in to catch them. I draped towels over the edge not only to keep out the drafts but to discourage the chicks from hopping over. The whole thing is going to go bust and I'm going to have chicks and poop all over the garage soon. 3 more weeks.....3 more weeks...... 3 more weeks.......

Anyhow, soon the lights will be high enough to cover the whole shebang with wire.

DH and I are designing the new coops at our property and I am trying to brainstorm how to segregate our lonely dame Buff Orp from the new chicks. Button, the tiniest banty Wyandotte, can still fit through chicken wire holes! We need things up and running for the move.

We can get organic "chicken wheat" from Azure Standard for incredibly cheap, by the 50# bag. I need to figure out how to feed them that and split peas without making the ladies fat. We still use the pellets, some organic corn- and soy- free stuff, Magill Ranch I think, also from Azure Standard.

4-H is going in fits and starts, but we have our chicks, and I think the fair will be fun.
