Sold my first 2 chicks this morning. Got on facebook and read that one had passed already at her new house. The lady says they were chirping alot when she put them in the new brooder. She thought it was stress from the car ride. Or they got to cold from the transfer from my brooder to hers. They were sleeping quite contently when I had them at the church (pick up point). I am guessing her brooder was to cold or the chick got bullied from one of the slightly older chicks she had. 1 1/2 week older orpingtons.

The chicks were a week old. Should I wait till the chicks are older before selling them next time?

(reposting this) I think it got lost.

Sorry I missed this earlier. No, you don't need to wait until later to sell them. It's just the luck of the draw. Some chicks die. Not much you can do about it. You'll never know if it was stress, too cold, bullied, genetically messed up, ill, or whatever. It could have died at your house just as well. I've had chicks look fine, and two hours later go check and one is gone......so you never know!

Here I am trying to figure out why things things get so exciting when, I go missing for a day or two. All this talk about hospitals and ER's is enough to scare a girl.

I think you should all get a better hobby like some nice simple safe chickens.

Oh, it was an "unsafe" chicken that conked CR on the head? I think I'd better go down and check on himself; he's out with the chickens, hope they are the safe kind.

OK just a quick note. No you are not rid of me. I am ok just have a bit of (ok a killer) headache. I don't normally take much as far as pain pills. Let me tell ya I am more than willing to consume the ones they gave me. They say Vicodin (sp) but I think they are simply sugar pills cause they seem to do as much good.

Thanks for all the kind words and thoughts.
I also know that there are others who are going through worse times than me and I send my best to them. Hoping you all speedy recoveries.
Sincerely Rob

You dont need to wait till they are older, Ive sold some the night they hatched ( I wanted to wait but they said no) You might tell the people to put the chicks in a small box inside a brooder with other chicks to they one can see each other 2 hear each other, also I tell them that the car has to be HOT.

Totalcolour,

S-he-it (that's Southernese) is a Rouen. No quacking yet but she (for ease) does make sounds like a mini car alarm when annoyed and that Daffy Duck "woo-hoo woo-hoo woo-hoo" sound when excited and happy. I haven't noticed any other possible issues with her. My husband asked the question he always asks when the dogs are sick - "Any diarrhea" I opted to NOT explain to him the texture/consistency of duck poo. Not to mention the trajectory.

Rainwolf,

I seriously meant to type Turkish Bay Laurel. I was having the *exact* same discussion with someone while typing my post. Serves me right for multi-multi-multi-tasking! We live in a rain shadow and some folks refer to this ten mile stretch of 101 that we're dead center in as "The Banana Belt" so things grow here that don't in other places. Or, they would if we had some dirt rather than live on a pile of rocks.
