I gave the girls a small squash cut in half today in within 2 hours they'd picked it clean to the skin! Glad I have 4 more in the fridge, they'll love that each day to keep them busy :)

I'll have to try that one. Yesterday, I cut up celery into tiny little bits and gave that to them. Didn't touch it. They gave me this look like I was a crazy person or something. Then, they conveniently flipped the bowl over and managed to contain all the celery beneath the bowl. Guess they didn't want to see it, either.

So my three chicks are looking pretty funny right now. Their bodies are beautifully fluffy and feathering out. Their heads seem to be awfully small and tiny compared to their bodies. My EE has completely lost her cute little beard.

They are 4 weeks old. I have an idea of what they're supposed to look like when they're grown. I'm not worried about the Rhode Island Red or Light Brahma, I know they'll be gorgeous - but I am hoping my EE will get her little beard back. Oh well. At least the EE has a spunky personality to make up for her having lost her cuteness. She continues to be the one with all the antics.

I thought that boys could be cooped up together... so I wasn't expecting a fight.
Most of my boys are fine together, but my BCM chicks were even bloodier than yours; and it happened so quick! They were broody raised in the main coop and run with plenty of space to run and hide from each other, but the 3 boys were out for blood while mamma hen and the girl quietly ate at the feeder, ignoring the commotion. I even tried painting their heads with blue-kote; and it did not slow them down. I ended up puting them in separate cages for a week, and then I put all 3 together but in a place where they could see no ther chickens. They stopped fighting then, and I had CL take them away for me when she visited.

About 3 months ago my 2 Barnevelder boys got in a bloody fight, one tore the others comb. It did not last long, maybe a minute and it was over. I have 3 roosters in my main coop. A giant English Orpington (Serius Black) who is top roo. He had run out into the yard, and roo # 3 thought he could sneak in a little action with one of the hens while Serius was away. Well, Serius must have hired Duracell as his henchman, because Duracell sure went after Flop (Flop was a runt). Poor flop. He hasn't tried again that I have seen.

Well hello fellow neighbors! I live in Spokane Valley, Wa. I am a new chick mom to 6 Barred Rocks and I am new to the whole chicken thing but I am soo excited! we got them less than a week ago and they are 2 weeks old and growing so fast! I am so excited for this new adventure.
Hi and WELCOME.
I'm fairly new here too!
This thread moves quick!

Well we are exhausted from yet another day or coop/bird/pen/brooder/garden/laundry & so on WORK.
I have spent $$$ gathering the needs for the giant lasagna, not o mention a tank of gas driving all over hill & dale shopping for all the stuff (try finding GF lasagna pasta)
We were all gathering at parents' in Elma, us being the farthest south in Raymond, and bro & sis in Puyallup, so parents' is a middle meet up place.
I am ready right now to make the lasagna (ground the pork yesterday & made sausage, made sauce today................
When I decide to check e-mails..
And there is one from Mom that says bro called her this morning & said we are having Mother's Day at his house SATURDAY instead of parents on Sunday and I am welcome to ride with parents to his house & bring my giant lasagna.
I told her NO.

In an e-mail.
Four days ago we made the arrangements for Sunday at their house !
I have spent DAYS working on this plus $$$
barnie.gif

I have people coming for birds Friday & Saturday and Monday.
I kept Sunday open and that has been this way for 4 days.
We cannot go Saturday, so go without us.
Crap !!!!!!!!!!!!!
HOW RUDE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She does whatever my little whiney brother wants.
Mom has pulled this crap so many times !
His girlfriend's birthday is Feb 10th (just like mine) and as long as brother has been with this girlfriend, my Mother has gobe nuts making a BD party for her.
somad.gif

There is no way after all my $$$$$ and 3 days of work I am going to drive to Puyallup.
So, I ain't making lasagna after all.
The sauce & all will be frozen...all the cheese, basil & motzerella stored/frozen/put away....and the 3 boxes of GF lasagna pasta we drove to Aberdeen for will keep for next time.
I am so disgusted !
This is the last straw with my brother pulling this crap.

Hey friends, I am just wondering if my fellow Washingtonians can tell me if I have enough ventilation in my coop? It's so rainy in my area that I'm a bit worried about the coop. Here's the thread where I asked about it, with pictures and measurements of the coop.
Nice coop. Myself, I would add more ventilation.
Looking at your coop I'm wondering if what I did might work for you.
My coop doors are essentially just hardware cloth attached to wooden frames.
Keeps the girls comfortable most of the year.
I built inserts that sit in the door frames during the coldest spell of winter.
They are held in place by hardware.
The inserts are acrylic panels set in a wooden frame.
This allows plenty of light.
If you find you need more ventilation, perhaps you could make that door window a bit bigger.
Good luck.
