to all the new peeps, this is a fast moving thread! There's a lot of good information here! We do however deviate from talking chickens at times! Just sayn!! LOL!

I've still got chicks hatching! They started yesterday morning around 10 AM and now I think I'm up to... hmm... kind of hard to see there's so many in the Brinsea now... 5 Silkies and 4 Seramas! Still waiting on 2 more Seramas and 4 Silkies. I'm a little worried about 2 of the Silkies that started zipping last night but still aren't out. They're getting knocked around so I can't really tell what's going on with them.

I'd like to get the babies out, clean out the broken shells, and put the babies in the brooder, but I'm afraid of shrink wrapping the unhatched chicks! Gahhh...

It's hard to know the right thing to do here...

Heading up to Red Reiner's this afternoon to pick up a few blue English Orps. They're just a week old, so it should be okay to put the babies all together in a brooder, shouldn't it?

I'll take pics once the babies are out of the incubator and settled. Looks like a couple lavender silkies, maybe one paint, another that was marked paint but looks black, (split to paint? is that how that works?), one black so far. I'm hoping the porcelain and black splashes come out soon so I can quit worrying! All of them are just cuter than all get out though...

Hello New Peeps!

And happy Monday to everyone - looks like it's going to be another glorious day, although my bunnies don't like it this hot.

Butchered 24 Cornish X on Saturday - and hubby ploughed the upper pasture. We are going to get rid of most of the chickens and ducks, and sow the pasture with a good mix, ready for winter and next spring. We shall keep only a few ducklings over-winter, and by spring they will be mature and laying (I hope).

Next weekend we are going to butcher the rest of the chickens, perhaps some bunnies, and maybe some ducks for FlyRobin!

Meanwhile, the house is a disaster from the new puppy - she chews and eats and barfs and I vacuum and shampoo and so it goes. The joys of having a BIG puppy!

Well I have eggs in the bator. Candling them is fun. 5 are turkey eggs and I have no clue when they should hatch. there are silkie eggs and those are super easy to see in. I have to stop myself from looking everynight. I made it a habit to put the date on them but kiddos didn't so again I'm not sure when some of them should hatch.

The ones I have major problems because they were just put in the bator no date or anything is the black copper maran eggs. I can't see anything at all because the shell is so dang dark.

I am keeping the temp steady and hoping. who knows maybe some will hatch.

I am still confused on the terms: pipping, zipping and how do you tell if they internally pipped? I am still learning. It is an adventure and tons of fun

I've already gotten my day off to a great start - first I heard from my daughter on Facebook that she has arrived safely in Italy, Florence and her apartment are beautiful, that she's very busy and she has blisters on her feet. I hope she can find some band aids.

I also woke up this morning to 4 pips out of my 6 Serama eggs and 4 pips on my Silkie eggs. I am hearing a lot of peeping and cheeping from one of the Seramas. I keep talking to her to give her encouragement - I'm sure no one else here has ever done that...

So hopefully by the end of the day I'll have some babies! Which reminds me, maybe I should go get the brooder set up. It's only day 20, so I wasn't quite as prepared as I could have been.
Yay, glad that all your babies, human and chicks, are doing well.

Interesting!?? The Navy has had a no harassment policy for many years now, unlike back in the 80's when there was no such thing. I have taken my share of harassment of course, but I do NOT put up with it, so I give it back, I never was the kind of gal that told the authorities, I just have my own way of retaliation. They usually got the drift!! I am very sorry that you were subjected to that, too bad it couldn't be resolved, I wouldn't give up my career for anybody! Especially jerks like that! And yes life IS too short!
I can't imagine you putting up with anyone's crap, Julie! And having seen the size of your biceps, I pity the fools who tried to mess with you. Actually I don't. They deserved what they got!

That's ok, get this! Some Mexicans down the road had a celebration, and they had a live band, ( I have no problem with parties, live bands ect) BUT, after 11pm it was still going, and they couldn't even turn it down some! This place is over a 1/2 mile away!! So, yea, it was like after 1am, that I finally fell asleep, tried turning my fan up, I could still hear the bump, bump bump!! Jeez!!! I'm with you!
Some people just need a serious whacking with the Clue Bat.

Well tomorrow will mark a significant date for DW and I. I guess that means I am gonna have take a walk out in the field to see if I can find any tansy and or lupine so I can pick her a bouquet.
Hard to believe how fast 20 years goes by.
Congrats CR! You and Diane are both gems.
