T HI, I would only use sand. Reason is this allows me to re-sand the run when I need to taking what is there before re-sanding to the garden.
I use straw in the winter time and throw food in it so it gives them something to do during those long wet days. By late winter my sand is pretty much toast.

I'd maybe do the sand, pea gravel, then the 7/8.

If you put anything on top of the 7/8 it will work it's way down into it in a short time anyways.

Hey that is so cool !
I have seen coops with double doors, and skylights, and even some with bubble windows, but you have the only 2 story with a slide !!!

Do they girls get trapped upstairs ?

Chickielady: The 2-legged kids still have claimed ownership to the upstairs and slide....so the "girls" (chickies) are not suppose to go up there.... They have a 8 x 40 ft run and the bottom for their coop...so no, there is no lock up upstairs...we took them out and carefully put them back down in their area. They sure like it up there though. Maybe after kids are no longer playing up there the hens can have it....

well, they know the 'lookout' is up there now !

My babies are only about 6 weeks old. They are a breed called Indian Runner. They walk really tall kinda like penguins! The breed is known for being excellent egg layers so I am hoping for lots of eggs! I am slightly allergic to chicken eggs so I will be very happy to be able to go egg crazy again!!

You need ducks!!! They are AWESOME!!! '

Very interesting...you are allergic to chicken eggs, but duck eggs are okay? I had never heard of this. Is it very common for people to eat duck eggs? They are much larger eggs aren't they? I have heard of Indian Runners, I think I have seen them at the fair, too.

Again ?
How many times is this guy going to get lost and give you a break ?
Didn't you say he was going to give you some free feed the first time he got lost ?
Where in the world is he coming from ?????

Well, when he said next week, does that mean Monday ???
Best Wishes for you !

He's coming from Oregon. He advertised on Craig's list, and makes a run when he's got several to deliver in this area. I don't know what address he entered into his blackberry, but it took him south of Tacoma instead of north Seattle. He says he going to give it to us at cost. We'll let him give us a discount, but we will give him something for his time. Last time he couldn't make it, he said he'd throw in a built in feeder. I certainly hope he means Monday. I worry about my smallest pullet. The others have her at the bottom of the pecking order. When they move here, I'll be able to keep an eye on her, and make sure she's getting enough to eat. She'll be the same size as them eventually. She's a few weeks younger.

so at 7 weeks one of my chicks has started to try to crow. he is an acona. they are very pretty chicks have a few pulletts to go with him... and now i think the turken is a roo too. privett hatchery gave me 2 roo's more than i ordered..... i only wanted one roo. my jersy giant. he gets picken on the most though... missing feathers on his tail and back. but they are growing back.

but the acona roo i got started growing its crest and wattles after week 2. this breed seems to mature very fast.

My sister is also allergic to chicken eggs. I researched alternatives for her and found that many people can eat duck eggs without reaction. It's something to do with the protein enzymes being different. They are very creamy and rich, too!
