We have a Wheaton Marans that is around 12 months who still isn't laying! How are Marans for laying what am i supposed to expect I am still really new to this?

FM - I am glad you might have had some news on the where abouts of your sister. If It was her you now know she is still here.

Is the picture upside down? Or is the chick to the side of the eggs?

the chick is to the side of the eggs but i did take the picture from overhead... sorry it is so messy of a pic but I am pretty excited.... It is a friend's incubator and her eggs. Her chickens are in with mine. she has silkie's, turkens, polish and black copper marans. So no telling at all what it is. the egg was a tiny white egg. chick has feathered feet and is black with a few light brown coloring on it's head... This is going to be interesting to see what the chick develops into...

She should be laying, maybe she doesnt lay a dark egg and your looking of one? Hate to ask are you sure its a hen

I hope so I just posted a pic of her! I hate to check! She is a big hen she is bigger than the rest of our other gals!

Hubby told me to count it's toes. 5 = silkie. Well it has 5 toes on each foot.

Wow you guys are super helpful. Thanks for pointing me towards breeders. I'm going to wait and see how the first year goes with these ones. they aren't even outside yet but I have a silkie that still could be a roo and i always worry about losing some to natural predators and such.

I'm reading this book free range chicken gardens. Does anyone fulltime free range their flock in washington and if so do you have a garden? I think mine would all get eaten by the stupid raccoon under my shed!

I am on 3.5 acres surrounded by forests up in the Mts. We have a little over an acre fenced with 6' chainlink. My birds free-range all day long every day, even when we are not home. I lost one to a neighbor dog 1.5 years ago, then I lost a hen to a bobcat when I brought my dogs in for their baths about a year ago, and last month I lost 3 to neighbors dogs because the gate was not properly closed. One of my dogs scaled the 6' fence of her enclosure (in the center of the 1 acre enclosure, surrounded by chickens), and she chased off the intruders and saved the other 27 that were out at the time. I don't let my bantam flock free-range unless we are with them as I noticed hawks tend to hang out in nearby trees when they are out.

I do have a vegetable garden and they decimated it. I now have it surrounded with 4' net on T posts, and it usually keeps them out as there are plenty of easier to reach plants. I have no moss left which means I have no lawn left in some areas as my lawn was 90% moss, and the chickens ate the few remaining blades.
