I bought one for my MiL years ago after she retired in SF & moved to 10 acres, started wearing braids & bib coveralls...so cute.
She got chookies & emus & sheep.
She never did use the chicken purse, though.

The chicken purse is rubber, right? I wonder if it would be a cute bag to feed scratch from. All the chicks would come a running - take one look at the rubber chick, think that's gonna happen to them, then run and hide. LOL.

... AND under the coop, a minimum height of 1" (yes inch) and a maximum height of 6' feet.

Now people that have no idea how to care for chickens are going to tell me how to build my coop?

That's such a strange requirement. What brilliant politician came up with that one? Seriously - who writes code down to 1" inch beneath a small outbuilding? It's a good thing they removed that requirement. That would have been silly and difficult to control.

They decided to make one set of laws for two very different areas (there went my rooster.)

No minimum size property - but there are big enough setbacks in place that a smaller lot might be out of regulation.

Number of chickens will depend on property size:
  • up to 5000 sqft - 3 birds
  • every 1000 sqft - 1 more bird
  • max 20 birds (this will cause issues with some of the folks in the incorporated areas!!!)

No more roosters on lot sizes smaller than 35,000 sqft in the recently incorporated areas. This makes me SOOOO SAD!!!!

Sorry about your rooster.

Their rules sound very close to Auburn's rules. What are the set-backs? Ours is 15 feet. That's how the city controls chickens in what I term the "McMansion" lots (really big houses on 5,000 sq. foot lots). There's not enough room to accommodate set-backs so those houses can't have them.

In Auburn, we have to have a 6,000 square foot lot before we can get 3 birds. The rest is the same as your area.

In Auburn, chickens have been illegal for so many years, getting neighbors on board with the idea has not been easy. I still chat friendly with my neighbors, but I can tell they don't like them. Only 1 neighbor, a German lady, was excited to see them. Most of the neighbors are nice about it (I got criticized by one gal, but, whatever - I can't seem to do anything right by her anyway). I can tell the other neighbors really aren't comfortable with it. I could have 6 on my lot, but we started out with 3 for that very reason. I'm keeping them pristinely clean - hoping to change whatever preconceived ideas that they have about them. Why is it that having a chicken as a pet seems to be such a scary thing to people? I'd rather meet someones chicken than the many pit bulls we have in our neighborhood.

Hi,
New to BYC and stumbled on this thread. I live near Lake Tapps, between Auburn and Puyallup. I started this year with 10 call ducks to use for herding practice with my dogs. I have 2 australian shepherds and a border collie. I had heard that Calls wouldn't actually hatch babies so I didn't worry about having any babies. Stupid me! I've had 36 babies this year. I now have 13 young ones in the brooder and 8 adults in the pen. I've been so fascinated with the whole baby thing that my dogs haven't worked the ducks since Oct and I've now built and extra pen for next year's babies. Anyone else in the area raising calls?

Welcome!

I'm not too far from you. I live in Auburn and grew up next to Lake Jane in Bonney Lake.

I'm not raising calls, but your story gave me a chuckle. I'd probably do something like that. I recall asking my husband many years ago if we could get a few cute little bunnies. He was like, um "No!" Then proceeded to tell me that it would be impossible to get rid of all the babies.

My husband used to keep some game birds (can't remember which bird) to train his French Brittany to retrieve and to have a "soft mouth". I don't think he ever ended up dealing with babies though. That was many years ago when the dog was a puppy. He passed away at 15. Gosh, I think I'm aging myself.

Ok, so I have a field trip to go to with one of my girls today. We are going to the Burke Museum. I have never been there, nore have I heard of it but it should be fun! have to leave here in a sec, but I have a problem now..... My girls are sick, so now I have to try and find out what they have, can't quite remember where I saw all the descriptions of sicknesses.
They have discharge from their eyes and nose and they are sneezeing/coughing. I have been so busy that I have not been sitting out with them the last few days so I am a few days behind on their cold. They also have the ICKY poops. No the discharge does not smell bad. Can some one refresh my memory of where to read on this or if you might know what it is that would help too! Thanks everyone, and hope you all have a great day. It is nice and sunny here!

Oh and to all the new people

I will try and chat with you all later!

Well sounds like today may prove to be interesting ! DW just got a call her son (26) cut his foot? ankle? leg? with a chainsaw last night surgery at noon today!

Sounds like he didn't learn from all my preaching about "it's too dark to be cutting wood."
Just the way I wanted to spend my day.

Yay! The build begins!

I'm amazed. Dave is a machine! He arrived, got his trailer set up, and immediately got to work unloading tools and lumber. After surveying the site for a minute he got to work and after only an hour or so building we have walls! My kids were quite the helpers. Hopefully I can keep them out of the way better tomorrow.
