I am really hoping I can get to the King Tut exhibit before it leaves.  DD is home from Italy tomorrow :weee and I think she and I will just hop the bus to Seattle so we can get up there before it's gone.  I LOVE taking the bus to Seattle.  Only $6 round trip, I don't have to drive in Seattle traffic and pay for parking.

SadieSue, you need to reserve your tickets online. You can't show up and expect to get in when you get there. I bought tickets a week before for noon on Monday. When we got there, they were booked all day up to 4pm.

Good tip Teva, thank you! I should have remembered that from when we saw the Picasso exhibit at SAM a couple of years ago.

I'd better choose a date and get on that!

NDnewbie you landed in the right spot you will find people with and without chickens that are really great folks., Of course the first thing they would tell you is chickens need a buddy(or 2 or 3) they are flock animals. However if you and your hen prefer the lifestyle you have now - by all means continue. Just think tho how nice it would be to have more hens, more eggs, etc.etc. Don't want to overwhelm you - so just WELCOME, enjoy your stay.

Going to look at this tonight...it would make a great broody pen right? Or, something for newbies to hang out in until they're used to everyone else, and vice versa. WDYT?

From what I've read about broody pens, I think that would make a great one! I'd probably recommend adding boards on the sides though, even if they are removable, to keep the chicken out of wind.

I bought BCM from him last winter, with no problems. By no means are they show chickens, but they lay just fine, and super brown eggs.

Your BCM's were beautiful! The egg your husband showed me was pretty, too. Jessica, I know you're trying to get a colorful egg basket - if you don't have a BCM yet, you might want to look into them.

I have a friend who's husband swerved to avoid hitting a squirrel. He drove straight into a tree and he's suffers longterm effects of a serious brain injury. It sounds like your son got lucky. Tell him about my friend's husband - maybe it will help reinforce the point. Although, I think it is a reflex reaction to avoid hitting an animal.
Thank you I will, I also told him he could have hit a car while he was spinning and never made it home to us or the other person.

Is the price of straw pretty much the same all over? I need a bale so I can stock the nest boxes and the throw some in the run. Can't do hay, I' horrifyingly allergic to it. Hoping straw is better. Where do I get it?

I bought straw from Reber. That said, I put straw in the coop 2 nights ago, and then read that chickens can get sour crop from it and get very sick. Since I have seen Drama eat the straw, I pulled it all back out. Looks like I'm going back to pine chips, which I am very allergic to. Thank goodness the coop and the girls are outside now.

Three times the charm! This evening about 8:00 the girls followed me to the sliding glass door waiting to be taken to the brooder in the garage (maybe I should use the term "growing out pen" since it's a 2.5'x4' wire dog kennel and the chickens are 10 weeks now). Of course, I didn't take them because they are sleeping outside in the new coop.

I came back out and sat down next to the coop. The girls followed me over to the coop, walked up the ramp and went in. I didn't shut the door right away. I sat and listened and they were chatting up a storm. I swear it sounded like the chickens were having a conversation. I joked to my husband that they were discussing redecorating the coop. Then, all 3 popped back out and walked back over to the sliding glass door. I guess the conversation was a conspiracy - and they discussed how to get back into the brooder.

So, we just went back to work on the chicken run. About 8:30, we went back over to the chairs next to the coop and sat down. The girls walked in and put themselves to bed.
