I have heard it is best to avoid cedar shavings. The fumes that they give off (which drive off the bugs) are bad for your chickens lungs.
I use cedar shavings in nest boxes and coop floors in adult bird coops, not in chick brooders.
The fumes that come off are minimal and the adult birds pay little time in the shavings and there is so much ventilation.
I recommend you do use it in this manner, however not fresh but kiln dried.

In the chick brooders I use either sand (for turkeys) or white shavings (also kiln dried) for ducklings, keets and chicks.

Thanks Jen & ReikeStar. It seems impossible to find a breeder in WA.

Thanks for the farm store info. I'll call to get more information about their source, etc.

If anyone later on knows of a BA breeder please do let me know. TIA

Question for whomever posted about the Eprinex and Permectrin II. I am continuing to gather stuff for our chicken first aid kit. Can I get away with one or the other, or are both handy full time. I noticed Eprinex gets rid of internal and external parasites (and worms??) and it's only applied on the neck of the chicken (therefore not in the water, yay!). What does Permectrin do? Is it moot if I already have Eprinex? Thanks!
The permectrin DUST goes into their dust bath along with DE & sand.
The spray is used for flies, crawlies, earwhigs, fleas, mites & louse in between.
For example, Cock birds are notoriously bad at dust bathing (imagine that ?)
Eprinex is given before stresses on the flock, such as before winter sets in, and before the strong spring lay.
The mite/louse issue is delt with daily in this manner, through dust baths and/or spray...the Eprinex is for internal and external.
The Permectrin will do nothing for internal.
But ya cannot give your birds eprinex once a month.

I have Eprinex too. But I got Sevin powder and I think I am going to get Permectrin II so I can spray. I have flies too so I figure I can spray it all around every week or so.

I have flies. Oh and I have learned that Silkies get mites very easily, so I am arming myself to prevent an investation the best I can. I actually just don't like bugs! Any kind really.

Silkies get mites as easily as any other breed.
If there is mites, all birds will get them.
I refuse to use Sevin as it is a really nasty "hard" chemical.
Permectrin is a synthetic of Permethrin.
Permethrin is a natural product from oils of the chrysanthemum.
That makes me feel better.
Permectrin is a synthetic of Permethrin.
It is phoney, but still I hate to use Sevin, or Malathion on any of my vegies, or animals.

Just got back from Monroe feed. Got one blue Wyandotte and three blue/red wyandottes to put under my broody speckled sussex she has been sitting on four eggs for 25 days. I gave up on the eggs. I will try and slip the chicks under her tonight. So I have a gold lace wyandotte with two three week old babies , my sussex will have four now and I have a mottled java that is sitting on seven eggs due in two weeks. I don't want to keep any of them !!!!!!!!! I have enough chickens (31).

That's ok I'm pretty sure I know where I'm going to re-home them (after dark)
