If I have a pullet who started limping tonight (like she's hurt, not like she's paralyzed) and there's no visible injury, what do I do? She's about to go to bed...could a good night of rest be what she needs, or do I actively need to help her somehow? She's still eating and drinking, just having a bear of a time getting where she wants to go.

Have you checked the bottom of her feet to see if there is a sore or a dark spot? Could be bumble foot. I would let her go to bed and check on her in the morning to see if she is walking better. If she is not, you might want to put her somewhere that she doesn't have to walk around much and has close accsess to food and water. Hope she is better tomorrow!

Now Lay-a has her wings held out a bit, took her quite a while to tuck them back in when going to the roost. Also took her a while to get on the roost as it's so high. I'm going to have to go get her in the morning before she jumps down from the roost or she'll get more hurt...

I checked for a long while and inspected her whole leg and foot and so far there's nothing different than her good leg/foot. I am going to go out there early (they usually aren't even coming off the roost before 8am! If I get out there by 7am should be fine) to make sure she doesn't try to jump down. I'll keep a close eye on things in the morning.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I had a hen that hurt her foot and limped around for 5-7 days.

And a quick coop tour. My husband and I built the run this past week. I still have to paint it and we still need to roof it. Because it is so dark in the run we think we may go with clear or translucent beige corrugated roofing.

Perfect for 3 LF birds. Size-wise, probably no more than 4.

The front...

The back... the top flat area will be a flip up door so we adults can stand up straight while cleaning the run. The kids can walk in just fine.

Rhodie looking at roost number 1... Caunnie demonstrating the nipple system waterer...

The traveler's pop-door. Solar powered with a light sensor. The door opens at dawn and closes at dusk. When you travel, just ask a friend to check on them once each day.

Roost number 2... Rhodie demonstrating the dust bath (although that front corner with the dirt on the white painted wood is where they prefer to bathe)...

Well, that's it. Small. Sweet. A lot of work to build, but definitely worth it.

OK so I'm freaking out. I was with the birds ALL day long and nothing seemed wrong and then I went to talk to a neighbor for 15 minutes and DH called me back home to say Lay-a was limping. That sounds like an injury right? And not a sudden onset of Marek's or something else potentially life threatening? I might die if this bird is really sick, she's one of my favorites and has finally started letting me pick her up sometimes! She's one of the EEs I talked about who don't like to be touched much.

sounds me to like she just pulled/strained something when landing or something... my big Goliath limped for a week when I stepped on his foot... he has bad habit of running between my feed at feeding time

Try not to panic.....deep breath.

Ok, if she is on the roost with the others that's a good sign. If you feel that unsure, get her down and bring her inside for the night and see how she does in the morning. It might make you and her feel better. She will probably be fine. But not jumping off the roost in the morning might be best. And having food and water near would be good. Just keep her quiet and watch her. Keep us posted!
