I'm fighting my city about my birds and the prosecutor has said that there is no such thing as a pet chicken. Can I refer to you someone who DOES have a chicken as a pet?. I have a couple of Michigan people who have made statements on my behalf for having poultry as pets.

I'm fighting to save my hens, the more support I can get will help.
If you are willing to help, I would certainly appreciate it. Please PM me if you can help.

he needs to meet Pierre !!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry your kids moved out on you like that. That must be tough.

I totally didn't expect to feel the way I do about my little guy being gone for 7 nights. He was so hyper last night I was ready to send him early. This morning he was so quiet... not his usual self. Poor kid was scared to go.
It is part of life !
Kids grow up & move out !
Sometimes they come back breifly, but it is part of life that they grow up & move on.
And "empty nest syndrom" can be very hard on a Mommie, something we just have to deal with...mostly sadddens you as you suddenly feel both abandones and kicked to the curb AND unneeded...but I got over it & LOVE my free life now !

I think I'd be more worried about him flying up and pooping on me.

Thank you, guys. That give me a bit of ammunition to fight the machine.
This too helps my cause as I try to explain the pros and cons of having chickens in the backyard (or house).
As an advanced master gardener from Michigan, I can't help much with crops for your area. I suggest you contact your county extension office for what is best for your area. I can say that I've done taters in a garbage can and they looked like heck during the growing season but turned out well in the fall when I dumped them out. Just like you said.

Thank you guys for sharing.

Randy we here (my 80 yo Dad & I ) have been planting garlic always, on Columbus Day, and cover with lots of mulch as straw.....the cloves will continue to put down roots all winter under the mulch, and emerge when the weather allows.
It's an Italian thang.

Howdy folks, I'm on Union Hill and I raise Icelandic chickens. I picked Icelandic chickens because I'm an Icelandic chick myself! Here are some pics of my homestead flock, they're still young, 6-7 months old.

This is Prímus:

And his ladies, Kara, Skráma, and Sirrí:

There are a few more photos in my album, from when they were younger in https://www.backyardchickens.com/gallery/image/view/id/5224211/album/6120001

They are awesome birds, very active, curious, and friendly. I love them so much, I could watch their backyard antics all day long

Beautiful birds!

I've wanted Icelandics for a while, as my great-grandfather brought his whole family from Reykjavik when my grandmother was eight.
The family still fishes the waters off Blaine

I've tried to get hatching eggs, but the timing never worked with my broody hens! I'd love to contact you the next time we have a broody hen if you sell me 1/2 dozen hatching eggs

Whew - just finished 200+ pages! I was in Portland over the weekend for a concert at the zoo - was a lot of fun!

But I found out when I got home that Juno went to sleep in the big coop - and my husband just let the babies stay in the brooder coop by themselves.

I even called to ask how it was going and he didn't mention this...probably because I would have asked him to move them. Good thing it wasn't too cold!

Last night I helped them find their mommy, they were very happy.

Still have the Brabanter cockerel that needs to find a home. He's started crowing - but it doesn't sound enough like a crow that it's an issue, yet. If only he'd stay quiet like this - I'd keep him!

Hope you are all having a good day!

Well I have a chick killer in the main coop. And its my barred rock.

Came out last night to lock up and no black chick. But a brand new white one.

There was blood streaks on the walls and the slider. Then I noticed that there was blood one the concrete on the other side of the slider where 3 of my hens like to go when I lock up.

So I start looking those three over and sure enough there was blood on the barred rocks beak.

I went out side into the run and found it. It had been scalped. The skin on the head was folded forward over its eyes. Poor thing.

So I moved the momma and her new chick and the talking egg ( which was surprising cause its a barred rock egg and I didn't think they were fertile.) to the cat crate I keep out there for emergencies.
Wow !
That is awful !

I keep babies & broodies away from potentially jealouse chick killers !
