OK well I'm leaving for the day and since the big girls are starting to lay, we're confining them to the coop and run for a few weeks to ensure they lay in nest boxes and not somewhere hidden on the half acre. I now need to bring down a huge fan to point into the run during these hot days or my birds are going to die. How come one of my girls seems so much more affected by the heat? She seriously has her mouth open HUGE and breathes really fast all day long on the hot days, and everyone else seems to do just fine, with very little panting these days.

Chickens don't sweat. Putting a fan in the run will not make your birds 'cooler'. It has been nasty hot here in Yakima, at or over 100 the last few days. I do nothing different with my flock. Just make sure they have access to water, and shade.

It doesn't always work but that is the best way to do it. Chickens are creatures of habit majority of the time. When mine free range they never get let out till later in the day so all eggs are in coop.

Different flocks react differently but some of mine would lay out of coop no matter if when they first started laying in the coop or not.

Quote: I wouldn't waste the energy. Chickens in Washington State been getting along fine in the heat for ever. Do you have a roof over your run? If not is the heat going down to that concrete of yours and making the area hotter? Another reason why I wouldn't do that. Not sure if that was you or not who did the concrete run. I assume you have dirt over it? Even with dirt the concrete will hold in the heat.

Decided to post photos of the boys before I start working today.....
They need to go asap. I currently have them in quarantine but they look to be very healthy large boys!

They both are beautiful handsome I mean.

The larger BO, just flared its hackles and ran at MO.

On a good note. I discovered that Renton changed its chicken rules, so now I'm legal to have 8 hens, rather than 5. Although I really don't need anymore now.
