I don't know where they come from, but they look like poppies to me. I've grown sea holly. That's not it.
OK, since DH is off to CAL...I have time...............and so have studied a bit.
And yes, they are Shirley Poppies...from where they came I have NO IDEA !!!
No sign of any Sea Holly in the garden at all.
The weird thing is the foliage on these Shirley Poppies is gray...and most I have seen is green...so ?
The other poppy that POPPED up this year (2 of them) are Papaver somniferum.................2 BIG ones and they were on the other side of the peas.
When Feb hit, I tilled in compost, raked it level, and planted my row of peas...........set up the stakes & hung the netting.
Then I planted a few seeds in front of the pea rows...Calendulas, Bachelor Buttons, a few others, but NO POPPIES !
And no nasties !!

I am trying to figure out whom that visited may have tossed a few seeds my way.....OR did it come from composting ???

Jessica, I'm sorry to hear about Tilda. I hope she gets better.

Thanks, me too! She's in a crate on the kitchen table (the extra table...not where we eat

) and seems high spirited but feelin' pretty crummy. She wandered veeeeery slowly around the hardwood kitchen floor for a while to stretch her legs this evening.

GAWD--the smoke here in Wenatchee is SOOOO thick you can TASTE it! We're down here helping DH's 80-year-old grandparents pack up their stuff...the fire is within 5 miles of their home now. :( They've lived in it for 60+ years....we've taken two trips to the other side of town (where my DH's aunt & uncle live)...I've never wanted rain so badly in my life! And none in sight. :(

Well it looks like I may be meeting with myself tomorrow !!!! CGG has had to back out for very understandable reasons. I am still going to be at the Enumclaw sale. But may not arrive until about 10:00. I plan to stay until the sale is over and then probably have plans else where after so probably won't stay much after the sale !!

Most likely. although sometimes we see light and dark in the same hive "NORMALLY" the colors tell breed but the bee's don't always read the same books we as beekeepers do.
Do you still want to keep bees ?? From the looks of it you have a good population. If I can get ya some drawn comb before spring there is a real good chance you could get a swarm to move into that box.
IF you watch the bees close you can tell where the colony is living. Keep in mind it may be up to 2 miles away. If wild / feral they are most likely living in a tree.
Remember last May I had a huge swarm here ?
Then up in the air they went & off in the woods...I have no idea where...there is No people here for up to 1 mile in any direction...........
YES I would love drawn comb, we have the hive body, 2 supers and still have some gear~~~~~~~~~
PM me !!!!!!!!!!

I agree, those look like nasturtiums to me!
Hallerlake is referring to this:

It has red blooms...single 4 petals with a black enterior...it also has small seed heads which I am not used to in a poppy...
It's foliage is almost gray-green, not as green as shown here...so I was hoping it was sea holly but sea holly is a thistle.

Those with food allergies...

I went to Barnes & Noble today and looked through books hoping to find a cook book that could help me with my allergies. I have not wanted to buy a vegan book that spent half the book trying to convince me to become vegan; however, I did find a vegan book that was exactly what I was looking for.

The book is called "The Complete Guide to Vegan Food Substitutions: Veganize It! Foolproof Methods for Transforming Any Dish into a Delicious New Vegan Favorite" by Celine Steen and Jonie Marie Newman.

The book teaches you how to make food substitutions for the following categories:

Dairy
Egg
Meat
Animal By-Products
Gluten
Soy
Sugar
Fat

The sections are color-coded for quick reference, and each section includes recipes that eliminate the food item. Each section also goes into detail about how to eliminate that particular item out of any recipe. Many of the items have multiple substitutions and the book explains the appropriate substitution to use for different types of recipes.
