OK, since DH is off to CAL...I have time...............and so have studied a bit.I don't know where they come from, but they look like poppies to me. I've grown sea holly. That's not it.
Jessica, I'm sorry to hear about Tilda. I hope she gets better.
She is talking about the hairy blooms....they are Shirley Poppies. They do not have a large seed head like the Papaver somniferum (Opium Poppy)I think they look like Nasturtiums....do they have long stringy looking stems?
Remember last May I had a huge swarm here ?Most likely. although sometimes we see light and dark in the same hive "NORMALLY" the colors tell breed but the bee's don't always read the same books we as beekeepers do.
Do you still want to keep bees ?? From the looks of it you have a good population. If I can get ya some drawn comb before spring there is a real good chance you could get a swarm to move into that box.
IF you watch the bees close you can tell where the colony is living. Keep in mind it may be up to 2 miles away. If wild / feral they are most likely living in a tree.
Hallerlake is referring to this:I agree, those look like nasturtiums to me!
I am infested with Nasties !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!In which case, the flowers are edible...which would also explain why they just "showed up"...a critter probably ate some, and pooed the seeds in your garden.I love "Nasties"...and they will come back on their own...
