I finally got a diagnosis for why I am having much pain and stiffness in my hips. I may explain most of the pain issues besides. I seem to have a form of arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis. So far what I have learned is that I am not going to have any fun with it, and I will not get any better over time. Still it is a relief to know that it is real, and not just in my head. I have spent way too many years being told, and thinking that I am somehow making up the pain. At least now I can know that there is a real reason for the pain.

I'm so sorry. Arthritis is not fun. I hope you can find something to help ease the pain. Do heat pads help at all? When my wrist hurts on cooler days, I use heat (I broke all bones in my wrist straight across - ever since, the weather makes it ache). That seems to help me.

A few weeks ago I was looking at Dehydrators on Amazon. Wasn't sure what to get - and wasn't sure if it was worth the expense, so I never ordered one. I'm still up in the air over whether it would be good to have or not.

I was considering this one because it looks like it could make fruit leather...

I'm sensitive to molds, so, according to my allergist, I'm not supposed to eat dried food. But, I was thinking if I made it myself and it dried quickly, I might be able to get away with it.

Thoughts?
I have this one:

Funny, there is a thread here on BYC about a woman who made hers into an incubator, worked great !
This thing does it all, dehydrates, fruit leather even makes yogurt.
Properly done, there is no mold.
I also have a round one, with an element on the bottom & no fan, and it does not work as well, but does work OK.
I have used it alot to do 'sun dried tomatoes, sprinkle sliced toms with Oregano & basil & dry.
Then you can seal them in a jar as is & rehydrate on pasta, or you can can the dry toms in EVOO.

Still no more Leghorn eggs since the first two on Wednesday, but the day isn't over. If we don't get more today I am going to start seriously scratching my head! I've looked every possible place I can imagine, including the neighbor's yard.

It is worth noting that our 13-month-old Wyandotte hen still hasn't missed a single day all summer! She started laying back in March and I honestly don't know when was the last time, if ever, she has skipped a day since then. We started keeping track in early July and she definitely has laid an egg every single day since then. One day she even laid two! However, I noticed a few weeks ago that her eggs were starting to get smaller. Over the summer she was laying massive eggs and now they are more like medium. The shrinking was quite rapid and drastic. It certainly doesn't bother me as she has more than earned her keep this year, but I'm just curious if this is a common autumn phenomenon? Also, she will surely molt here before too long, right?

That's cool! I was under the impression that they molted for months and would stop laying for months. I really have not been looking forward to molting because I didn't want feathers everywhere - I'm hoping my 24-weekers won't molt this year. Will they?
yes, they all molt.
Babies go through a juvenile molt, which is cuz as they grow they need more feathers to cover their bodies, and 1 year olds & 1 year every year after that, the birds do a hard molt.
Yes feathers will be every where.

I like garlic....a lot.

I use it for everything! Yeast infections, ear aches, tooth aches, headaches, fever, flu, etc. There's tons of uses! We are never without garlic here :)
Us either, I grew about 10 pounds last year & still have about 5 pounds left.

Not that I'm an old timer or know everything about this, but it is my understanding that they won't molt if you're using supplemental lighting. Recently my 2 16.5 week olds went through a mini molt; they suddenly dropped all their gorgeous tail feathers and the yard looked like they'd been attacked! Those feathers grew back very quickly (I attribute that to always keeping them on a high protein feed) and they're starting to look ready to lay soon. My big girls went through a mini molt around that age too, I think they were somewhere around 12-14 weeks when they molted.

That 16 week old molt was their juvenile molt.

I had a couple of dehydrators several years ago. One was one of those round plastic stackable tray ones like in your link. Not the exact same. I did not like it. If I used more than 2 trays or larger pieces of fruit, it would mold. I could get it to work if I dried the fruit out in the oven for several hours on very low heat, with the door open. Just wasn't worth it. I ended up giving it away.

It looked like this

The one I liked is more like this one, but the front doesn't come off, there are 4 shelves/drawers.

Russ the round one is the one I use for acidic food, like the tomatoes.
The Excaliber is the one I use for everything else.
The excaliber has many trays, and a fan and adjustible temperature.
If you treat your fruits, with lemon juice or blanch first, there should be no mold or browning.
