You know that trick people always recommend to float seeds on top of a bucket of water to kill rats? Would that trick work for squirrels too?
Hmm...I don't know, squirrels can jump / climb better than rats, so I would think they could get out...

Good job! Ya know Jennifer, it's your hatch and there are things that everyone has to learn by doing. There are things you can do to help get a better hatch rate, but, the bottom line is everyone's house and hatch area are different, and those LG's are so sensitive it's ridiculous! I think all you can do is follow your gut, do the best you can and take care of your chicks well. I try to read as much as I can, and if I'm really stumped I ask some of my friends here what they use or what they do, and if I can do it, I try it. Did you try looking for the LG thread on here? There are a myriad of incubators out there, that will do just about everything, I have a Brinsea octo 20, I have used it to hatch about 5 times then the stinkin fan went out! But, I was smart enough to get the free two year warranty and sent it back and they fixed for free! So, now it's ready for action! Just do some research on incubators and I am sure you will find one that suits you! Good luck to you and the rest of you hatch!

Thank you! I don't think I'm going to get anything else to hatch out of these eggs though. I'll just leave the incubator on for a few days, but I don't have much hope. There is one other BLRW that I helped out, but it is having a lot of issues and will likely be culled. Which is a total shame; it's gorgeous.

If I ever try again, I'll probably pick up a Brinsea. They sound pretty dependable, for a small incubator. For now, I'll try to locate a few chicks from good breeders. Anybody have silkie chicks???

Wow, this week wins the total suck award. On top of everything else, one of our close friends is being sent to Harborview tonight with a badly broken leg. She was hit driving home from work on her motorcycle.

Well, I don't think it's legal to shoot guns in Seattle, not that I would ever own one in the city anyway (just a personal choice). Nor can I afford to buy one, not even a pellet gun. That's why I thought of the seed trap, though my BF is insisting on trying deterrent methods first as he is a big old softie. I love wild animals as much as the next person but I'd love to feed those little buggers to the dogs.

wow..wish I could go!

Well, to make you feel better - whoever listed it, listed the address wrong. Or it was a fake ad. We drove all over the place and even talked to the property manager, who had talked to a postman. The address that was listed doesn't even exist. The property manager had quite a few people come by and talk to her. She had no idea who, or where the people with the closing fish tank store were.

We candled the white egg this evening. We saw three toes and the embryo was moving all over the place! Such fun. The kids are pretty excited. Then we looked up 13-day embryos online - the kids were a little grossed out, but they thought it was cool.

I don't think I'm even going to bother candling the brown eggs or the olive ones. I just can't see through the shell with my flashlight. Those eggs have some pretty thick shells! The olive shells are extremely dense - no light passes through at all. So far, nothing smells. Fingers crossed none of the brown or olive eggs explode.

Hatch day will be a complete surprise with those eggs because we have no idea if any of them have developed at all.

Oh no, I'm very sorry about your friend. I hope she's ok!

I'm also bummed to hear about your little chick that's having all the problems.
Maybe tomorrow you'll have a nice surprise waiting for you, your friend and the chick will be doing well. ??
Sounds like you could use one of these....
