A few years ago, my mom adopted an insane terrier that looks like it hails from Chernobyl. We realized that he has taken care of our rat problem when we found some eggs under the chicken house. They were only there for a few days and had not been touched. In years past, we've noticed rats moving around under their house and I'd find them poking around in the pen after dark. One summer, I was having such fun sitting at an open window with my .22, plugging rats as they popped out of their hole in the back garden. Haven't seen a single one back there. Haven't seen any scrounging around for seed under the bird feeders. That was another good sniping spot. While I despise the dog, I'm pleased that we don't have rats any more.
Thats great that it took care of the rat problem. That is what those dogs are bred for. I am sure it is much happier killing rats than being some overly groomed purse dog.

Well, since Salma is eating on her own again, my BF desperately needed a break and spent the night with me, and he's still here, so no update on her yet. I'm not worried, though.

I have new babies this morning. 4 of my Cream Legbar eggs hatched overnight. I have 2 boys and 2 girls. 2 more eggs have pipped. So exciting! My girls have apparently stopped laying for the winter so unless I put a light out there, these will be my only fall babies.

So jealous! Congratulations! Keep us posted, with pics please! Can't wait for blue egg pics. :)

One week and 5 days after Blanche's injury, and she finally laid an egg. She had been laying 5 a week before her injury. It is small, and has white raised bumps on it. Her leg looks good.

Glad to hear it! Are you keeping her separate from the flock?

I thought Seattle use to have those when I was a kid downtown.
Wish I had the $$$$$$$$$.
Love that clock.
They did but a lot of places got rid of them for some STUPID reason. If you have ever been to the Maltby Cafe, (In Maltby, Snohomish county) there is a small street corner clock in the parking lot/driveway and that one was also built by Jimmy Collier.
I have two other clocks built by him, one is a grandfather clock (not for sale) and another huge street clock (also not for sale). Let me see if I have a pic of the other street clock......
Well I can't find one durring the day so you can see the details but this is one of my favorite pics.

This one you can see both clocks, as if you had just come in our drive way.
Awesome pics. Ya know what would make those clocks better??? If they were in my yard!!!!
Yeah I bet !

I really wish Jimmy Collier and his wife were still alive, they seem like they would have been great people to have known!
By the way CR......
NICE NAILS!!!!!

That is awsome! Just one question how can you tell what sex they are?

Oh so happy for you. That has got to feel good that you know she is feeling so good that she is back to laying.

Quote: No, I never separated her. She never seemed sick and didn't have any wounds or anything. Just the injured toe/foot/leg, whatever it was. The only thing I changed was to lower the roosts nearly to the coop floor, so she didn't have to jump much. I think I'm going to leave them there because I have a Jersey Giant that formerly never roosted until now. She's just too big and heavy to jump far, she's not even full grown!

I'm behind on posts and no time to catch up right now. I wanted to report in on incubating. The twins and I candled all 5 eggs this morning. This is the first time we've candled all of them at one time, but I figured we'd better since we go into lockdown on Thursday. In the past we've just candled one each time and then candled a different egg the next time we candled. I didn't want to handle the eggs too much.
This morning, in the white and two brown eggs, we saw definite embryo movement.

We now have hope something might actually hatch this weekend.

The olive eggs are still unclear. In one olive egg, there was a definitely defined air pocket on the proper end, but the shell was too dense to see movement. The other olive egg doesn't look so positive... it had a small air pocket on each end, so I wonder if it may have quit. I didn't take it out though, just in case. There are no cracks or anything, and it doesn't stink, so I'm hoping for the best. Worst case scenario, after the hatch is over, we may take it outside and gently peel the side where the larger of the two air pockets is, while trying to keep the membrane intact, so the kids can see at what point the embryo was when it quit.

Tomorrow I'll fire up the second incubator to get it warming up and get humidity going. Thursday, I'll lock down the eggs - two in one incubator, three in the other. That way, when they hatch, they'll have plenty of room.

I have to be gone for pipping and zipping.

I think my husband will be a good daddy for the hatching chicks though. And, I'm sure he'll take video with that new video camera he bought himself for my birthday.

LOL! (two months later, I'm still waiting on my birthday present that he promised - a new cell phone...

Have a great day everyone!

Just out of curiousity, how does Blanche fit in with your flock? I have Leghorns, too, and they are much smaller than Orps and JGs!

She fits in fine with the rest. My Orp and JG aren't full grown yet, so I'm sure that helps. Blanche and Ginger are about the same size. Blanche usually seems like the leader, actually. I've never seen her peck at anyone, but everyone follows her around and does what she does. She runs, they run. She eats, they eat. She comes to see me, they all do. ;) Ginger and Buffy both peck at Leila (the JG) but not at Blanche.

Blanche and Buffy grew up together in the same coop/run. Ginger was from the same 'farm', but lived in a different coop. The first day that I had the three here, Blanche and Buffy pecked at Ginger and wouldn't let her in our coop, but by the next day they were all fine.

You don't live too far from me, you are welcome to come meet my flock! :)

Interesting! I'm still waiting for my Leghorns to stick up for themselves. Don't know if it will ever happen. I added them as two-month-old pullets back in mid-June and they still get chased off the feed, or their dust-bathing spots, whenever the others are paying attention. Fortunately they don't seem to get pecked much, maybe a couple minor nips a day. Poor Salma gets a lot worse from the blue mutt, Gertrude, ever since Gertrude was molting and cranky and ousted Salma as flock leader a month or two ago. And I'd love to meet you and your hens sometime!
