What kind of thermometer do you guys use in your brooders?  Right now I'm using a meat thermometer (oh, the irony... and their future in-garage dust bath will be a roasting pan... LOL... yes, there are times that I find humor in the most inappropriate things).  The meat thermometer works fine, except one of the chicks have taken to it as a pillow.  When chicks sleep on the meat thermometer, you don't get accurate readings.

I use a wired indoor/outdoor OR I use a wireless.
That way I can put the reciever in the kitchen & know what the temp is in the brooder/incubator...but fair warning...the chicks LOVE to peck the little tiny red sending unit out (that is attached on the end of the wire) and then it is useless....
So I make sure (now) that the end of the wire where this sending thingy is, is duct taped to the brooder wall.

Where did you find a wired indoor-outdoor thermometer? I need to replace mine, and the wireless kind don't read through low-E coated windows.

They are the size of a banty egg. Im assuming they are eggs from one of my young chickens that havent ever layed before

LOL! DH bought one of those yesterday. He hung the receiver inside the fish tank. It worked great for a couple of hours. The chicks had lots of fun with their new hanging play toy. Now the readouts are wrong - really wrong!

Probably ate the little red dealy bob !!

Walmart or Home Depot carry them.
Last I was at Rite Aide, they had a good assortment.

We'll I got the pvc cut and half together. I need another person to help me get it bent up. I tried using the ladder and doing it in the middle and fell off the ladder. I absolutely HATE that ladder. I asked for a real ladder that reaches up at least 12 feet. He got me a 6 foot Little Giant that doesn't have textured treads and the treads are to narrow. Much cursing on my part after falling in the mud that is the chicken run. Even barefoot only gives me barely more traction on that thing. I'll have to get some nonskid paint for those things to make it usable in the future.

Just taking a break to cool off. I was sweating up a storm out there. I have proof, the sky went from sunny to dark.

The brahma laid an egg today and has been chasing her chicks off. So she will be going back in with the main flock if she doesn't let them snuggle. None of the silkies mind being snuggled so the chicks will stay with them for now. That silkie cockerel is worth his weight in platinum with how he cares for chicks.

Ok, off to fight some more and see if I can manage the pvc before it starts pouring.

I also just let the chicks tell me if it is the right temp or not. If they all sleep to the outside ring that the light makes on the brooder floor then it is to hot. If they are all huddled together directly under the lamp, then it is to cold. A mixture of both, just kinda scattered in and out of the light it is just right!

On one hand, I don't have to worry about spilled grain attracting rodents, because they're cleaning it up like feathery vaccum cleaners. On the OTHER hand, they're also eating every bit of the lemon balm which is Elvis's favorite green.

And on the OTHER other hand, I'm worried about diseases and parasites, although since the Redwinged Blackbirds overfly everything and the (editorial comment withheld) geese seem to be back that's probably a lost cause anyway.

I don't have time to chase them out, and as a result they're getting to the point where I have to worry about tripping over the little blighters. It's tempting to set a trap for them, but it would be WRONG and anyway I only want one of the cockerels.

Wait, so you just have some random chickens that showed up? Wonder where they came from.
