Gout runs in my family. Kidney stones do not. I understood that gout was an autoimmune disease, like rheumatoid arthritis.
Not that I have ever heard...I was told it is a problem with the Uric acid that can build up or some such.
Geeze, don't tell my Dad that it is a auto immune disorder, he thinks I am a weak idiot (hyper condriac) and have every auto immune disorder that has ever been 'invented'.
I actually only have 1: Celiac Disease (but that has tons of symptoms) but I inherited it(the gene) from his side of the family, and his mother, my granny, had RA extremely bad, classic deformed fingers and toes from age 55 or so to age 70 or so..classic.
She also had dry eyes (Sjoren's (sp?) and cold sores which I now realize were from celiac disease as well.
They were not cold sores but dermititis herpetiformia...elbows, knees, mouth to rear end, depending how much wheat you ingest and how mad the immunal system attacks the entire GI system.
So the auto immune gene runs.....................but Dad will not admit it, he has gout BAD every so often so is on meds, and has monster kidney stones so big they have to be lasered to break them up and then he can pass them.
The one getting lasered next week was the size of a golfball...and this is the second time the doc will attempt to break it up.
It is horrible.
I could be mistaken about gout being an autoimmune disease. My poor mother has osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. I had celiac's disease as a child, but it seemed to go away after a couple of years, or maybe I'm just asymptomatic though the sores in the back of the mouth sound familiar. Time to go do some research.
