So I guess I have caught up with all the posts...and would like to report that all my birdies are fine this morning...only one still sneezes every so often...and he will get one more dose of water as he does not want to drink on his own...NONE of the 2 mo olds got this "cold" and NONE of the older hens got it...only the "teenagers" (those under a year but over 6 mo)
The Guineas did not get it...
The 3 pullets that I caught sneezing yesterday are all better, they never really got "it" just sneezed, and kept right on acting normally, beat the illness before it started.
So no one has ever seen this sort of thing run through a flock before ?
It sure has been odd...but I remember the one hen when I was a teenager (that I took to the vet?) and my vet said she had a cold, simple as that.
I guess when they get "sick" it isn't always a deadly plague, that chickens can get a simple cold like we do.
And it may spread, and given that they are healthy birds, they should be able to beat the bacteria/virus.
Still, a mystery where it came from, and a mystery what it was.
But lost no birds...it never even got bad where I was worried about death...SO
All is well, and continueing the bleaching buckets/feeders/shoes, etc and observations.

Cleaning the crick is a muddy job. We hand dig it every season so that is doesnt change course, or overflow. So we dig out the edges with shovels, then we block it with plywood to back up the water, then realease. We do this at least 6 times, and it flushes out all the silt. The silt settles in a catch pond at the end of our properties, then we scoop it out with buckets, and fill in any holes that need filling. Like I said, its a muddy job. My youngest dog likes to help stir up the silt. And by the time we are done, her cream colored paws turn black as tar. Then it is bath time!

So called "fun work" on a hot day...but all the same, maybe a culvert pipe is what is needed ?
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ I hear ya !

We have actually looked into installing a culvert pipe. But the County says "NO" due to the fact that it is an artisian spring. "sp?" But it really isnt THAT much work or all that hard to clean out. And I dont mind doing it for my mom. Plus cleaning out the crick is when I harvest watercrest.

An 8 week old kitten can become anemic from fleas, they could even kill him(though ususally not unless he's already weak), lost one when I was a kid that way. If money is tight you can also use some of the 12+ week stuff on a towel and then wrap him in it. And you can always use a really good flea comb with metal teeth. They take a long time but they do work. Any way you can knock back the population on him long enough for him to be able to use the older stuff...

I'm glad he's very healthy, but definitely don't want him anemic or anything. Thanks for the suggestions, too.

I also got flea bombs for the house as well as that powder for the carpets. I'm hoping to take care of it all maybe tomorrow or something. The fleas are horrible this year! Has anyone heard of using Skin-So-Soft from Avon to repel fleas? My dad said he heard of doing that. I don't have any of it, but maybe could order it or something?

The original "Skin so soft" worked wonders for fleas. Im not sure if it is the same stuff now days, or where to get it. But if you can find it, I would recomend trying it. I just have NO idea where to get it. Sorry I'm not more help.

Hi all;

So today is a very sad day for me. Yesterday I went out to check on my guinea hen and her nest and found that something had getten her. In addition they destroyed all the eggs in the nest as well.

Now I have no guinea hen. The boys are just beside themselves and are wandering around the yard calling her and it is just sad. I feel so bad for them. Now I do not even have her or her babies. Just out of curiousity does anyone have a guinea hen they would be willing to part with??

What a day... Went out to harrow the big pasture with one of the horses... Well she freaked out! Bucking, snorting, half rears...

So the mare Lacy just isn't going to work with pulling the harrow. So I pull big old Red out. Tack him up in a curcingle, attach the draw reins, attach the harrow, and go to work. He did AWSOME! Until he stepped on my heal... Took all the skin off the back side of my heal, and now I am hoping it is just a bruise. But sheesh!!! Does it ever hurt. It feels like someone has placed a branding iron to my heal and ankle...

So I ignore my foot and ankle, and keep on going. Then the harrow gets stuck on a scotchbroom stump, good old steady Red decides that the harrow is going to eat him, so he takes off trotting up the pasture, dragging me and the harrow behind him... Im strong, and not a lightweight, but he's a BIG horse and about had me airborn... My sister and her friend sure thought it was funny, and laughed. Then asked if I was ok. lol I'm pretty sure I will be ok. Though I think I might need to bandage my heal up...

Hope you all are having a less eventfull day than me!

We're going to the Evergreen State Fair. We want to see the different kinds of chickens in person, and maybe locate some local breeders. I think buy local definitely applies to chickens. I've been advised to go early. After the judging people take their birds home. Is there anyone here I should look for while we're there?

I am looking for New Hampshire. If you find the source around here, let me know. I do have purebred RIR that will be laying soon.
