I used both white, red wood shavings and compressed straw which is really soft unlike wheat straw, and evey morning I go coop to coop and let the birds out and scoop poop trays, walk down to the compost and dump it on.
I do the same cleaning rabbit cage trays every 2 or 3 days...then about 3 times a year I replace all the coop 'bedding' in nest boxes and on the floors, and throw it on the pile.
Also coffee grounds, kitchen scraps, vegie leftovers no one wants...and pitch fork it evey 2-3 days to turn it over, water in summer..and
when I get a giant pile, I start a new one...so the first is 'cooking' keep turning and keep it damp.
When you know it is ready to plant is when it has no more recognizable poop or straw in it.
The first batch of vegies I plant in it are a pack of lettuce seed for the chickens to eat.
I'd guess it takes about 3 months to have it ready to plant is you follow this, especially turn it often...and keep it damp.
