Well then my pile will go in the garden area this fall then....

Do you have a small garden with a way to cover it? Whatever you do with your compost it should be covered for the winter or the rain will leach the nutrients right out of it. I leave mine in a pile and cover it with a tarp for the winter then spread it in the garden in the spring.

Hmm will do on the cover part since I have two raised beds easy to cover.

So we got a second egg, but it is way smaller than the first.

So "A"-it is from a different duck or "B"-it is just the natural up and down weirdness of first eggs?

I still love them! The green is SOOOO cool!! None of the neighbor kids have ever seen a green egg! They are mesmerized by it!

It is freezing!!! Only 52 this morning when I got up!

I'm not ready for this yet!! I feel like we never got a summer!

FYI---If anyone is going to the Puyallup Fair look in the education building at the artwork. My daughter's watercolor of my black runner duck is going to be up for judging!! We are very excited! She won the judges award last year for a watercolor painting of a pansy flower. We are hoping she does really good with the duck this year. It is alot more advanced!

Ok I'm off to start stacking firewood up by the deck! If it gets colder I'm building a darn fire! I don't do cold!

Rainwolf, are you from Sitka? I really like your avatar, reminds me of SE Alaska.

Russ in Renton, formerly of Ketchikan.

No but sometimes I wish I was! My sister and I work for a airline so my family has gone camping for 1-2weeks in Sitka every year (except last year) for the past 8 years. The kids grew up camping on the beach and fishing for salmon off the beach. Watching the brown bears fish in the ocean or rivers and eating marsh grasses. I hope that they all learned a lot about life and our environment by going to Sitka every year. I tried to teach them to be aware of the things nature could provide for them if they just pay attention!

My Avatar is NW native work that I have as a necklace and also my photography studio logo image. When the economy is good I can sell a lot of my artwork photography, when its bad like now I have a hard time selling even my greeting cards, sigh... just in case you want to peek

And I loved Ketchikan! I've been lucky enough to have visited there a few times. The pantry burgers are huge! and I'm a big Ray Troll fan.

Just reminding everyone that entries for the open show at the Puyallup Fair close Tues Aug 31. http://www.thefair.com/_assets/editor_upload/File/managed/2D95327E1128A692ABD038FF7089FA27_2010_Poultry.pdf
This
is the link for the premium book. Essentially, you enter a bird for $2. Everyone who enters a bird or birds gets 3 tickets to the fair (normally $10 each or so) so it's a great deal and one all local poultry fanciers should take advantage of. Be exact when copying numbers and letters for breed and variety- the fair is a stickler for that and will DQ your bird if you put B for black when it should have been A for white. Birds check in Wed Sep 8 from noon to 8 pm. There will be a vet check and POSSIBLY a blood test or mouth swab if you are not already NPIP. There is no cost for any of this. If you don't have a leg band, the fair will sell you one at the check in desk. The fair zip ties cages closed to discourage theft and feeds and waters birds until pick up Sunday night from 6 to 7:00 pm. So come on, grab your favorite bird- the one who just molted and looks really nice. Give him or her a little bath Tues night and come on over Wednesday. It's fun. It's cheap. And it's a blast to show your bird for the first time! The worst that can happen is that Fluffy will be DQed for some little defect, and, even then, you went to the fair super-cheap!

I will cover my pile from now on, just when it is real hot or when it is raining also??

I do not cover it when it is raining, some people do, that is up to you.
I do cover it when it is long dry days to keep moisture in, although if it gets to hot it can kill the good bacteria too.
I just have a water shortage so cannot water my poo pile daily so that I cover it now.

Not to worry I can say that cause thatis what my scrap/farm truck is.

My truck is 94' Chevy Silverado. Battery cables have already been checked, brushed clean and reattached. Everything works, lights, anoying buzzers, horn, just no turn over when the key is hit. It doesn't even click when you turn the key... So the starter will be pulled today, and taken in to be tested...

It is the starter solinoid ! Ha! Betcha!
And no the wyandottie sisters are fine...and most of the BBS Marans are fine, it is only 2 or 3 that have this 'cold'...no plugged nosies, no snot, they just are lethargic, and sneezy mostly...for a while Elliot the roo had rales...and for a day he did not want to eat so I made him eat & drink by syringe...but all the birds are pigging out now, and Elliot has no more rales, although still sneezes every so often.
This is 3 birds in a penned flock of 12, in between another pen of 21 Ameraucanas, and on the other side seperated only by wire is20 or so more chickens.
If it was something contagious, all of them would have gotten it, I am sure.
Elliot and the 2 or 3 maran pullets came out of a hatch from early this spring when I had super high humidity and had a hard time getting it below 70% during the whole incubation, maybe some of you remember ?
So maybe they are fragile healthwise, primadonna hybredised chickens.

I am filling a big raised bed and turn the poo pile daily if I can, and I will cover it this winter, if nothing else, it will help hold the heat in, and that keeps the "bugs" and wormies happy !
