I am having some trouble finding more info on their temperaments, but I think most folks keep them because of their egg color. It is really quite spectacular!

In terms of lay, I'm not sure. I believe I read somewhere that they lay on average 200/year.

Wow!! 722 replies to this one post! That's great. I have to go bird my birds to bed so I'll come back in a bit and read them all.

I just came on to review the "Recent Posts" made since I last logged onto BYC but now I must come back and see who else is on here from WA.

To save time, I'll refer y'all to "My Page" on BYC where you will find a link to my personal website. I need to update the info on the "My Page" as it was written last year but I've got albums listed on my website with pics of my various birds.

I am also a Manager of MSN's Northwest Poultry but since MSN is doing away with all their Groups, I've got to move it to either Multiply or maybe Google.

Northwest Poultry isn’t really a “club” per se. It’s just an Internet Group where I’m trying to get as many Washington/Oregon poultry raisers and breeders to come and let folks know what they have. You’ll notice that there isn’t much chatting that goes on. I just thought it would be a good idea if as many folks in the area (particularly WA for those of us up north) were able to list what birds they have so that if someone needed something they might be able to find it locally rather than ordering from a hatchery, buying from a feed store (which are hatchery birds most likely), or travelling a great distance.

I can't remember whether the rules for BYC allow me to post the link to NW Poultry so I won't. Anyone interested in joining that can email me privately.

Lastly, let me just say that while I have many different breeds, I'm focusing my breeding efforts on pure Blue Wheaten & Wheaten Ameraucanas and Welsummers. We show them as well as a variety of ducks and Pilgrim geese.

Well, I don't know what I was thinking. MSN Groups is closing so I've got to decide if I'm gonna move the group over to Multiply or do something else. The website was originally put together by a kid - I think he's 13 - and he's already got something going on over at Google.

I'm a co-manager of NW Poultry and he just last night sent out an announcement that NW Poultry was closing and he's moving everything over to Google. I don't know why that happened without any discussion with me or the other members but it did.

So I'm still looking into moving the MSN NW Poultry over to Multiply and seeing what else might be available. For now, I'll keep the MSN site open until it closes in Feb. '09. Here's the link to the site:

I think I've been bitten by the silkie bug. Anybody know where to get Silkies in Western Washington? I'm looking at the spring time, as I have no where to put them right now.

We're waiting until spring to get more chickens. I am trying to hold out for spring 2010 but we'll see if I can make it. We want to wait until spring b/c we want to bond w/ the girls. hard to do when they're outside.

Hi! I live in Olympia and have had chickens all my life. I keep thinking I would like to show them, but I am VERY involved in dog training competitions, so not sure I will ever find the time. I just end up sitting out in the pen enjoying watching them!

I took a little break from livestock, and have now got everything fixed back up and am ready to go again. (I had two total knee replacements). I want to end up with 3 or 4 good egg layers and maybe some sebrights or modern games.

Hey, anyone hatch Grey Call Ducks in the Kitsap area (or close by)? I'm thinking about next spring. I'm still planning on things and getting my *ahem* Ducks in a Row...

Oh, BTW, when is the earliest anyone has had a pullet lay an egg?

We got an egg on Sunday that is about half the size of a regular egg. It's very dark too. Now, our first suspect is our bantie "Momma Hen" who came with her chicks and our big Roo from my folks' place. However, our neighbor had their first egg last week also, and her hens are about 4 months old. I'm not certain how old ours are, but we've had them for 8 weeks, and I think they were about 6-8 weeks when we got them.


Oh, and a side note. I named one of the roosters in that bunch. "Roux", because he's kinda red and flashy, it rhymes with "Roo", and I think he's handsome. I was just walking back to the house after feeding them on Monday and it struck me. (I had forgotten that Roux was Johnny Depp's character in "Chocolat" until I did a search to make sure it was an actual name.) I've got Roux in the separate pen with my 9 week old purebred pullets. He's really gotten fond of them now. I also named a few of them too. My SLW is Wynnie, and my Gold Stars are Lorelai & Sookie. I haven't named any of the other purebred or mix breed birds. I'm not really wanting to name the mixes, until I know who I'm keeping.

I also broke the news to my DH that I'm planning on getting more birds next spring. He took it surprisingly well... which worries me. What does HE plan to bring home next?!?! LOL

I am just not sure which counties they are in LOL I know Snohomish for sure, another inPuyallup (pierce co) & LongBranch, not sure which county that is in.
