Sorry about your loss. Hope your new babies make you very happy.

I live just over a mile down the road from Webster Road Feed. I got two of their Salmon Faverolles out of this batch. One is little -- I'm a sucker for a runt -- but they both are doing very well. I also got 6 Buff Orps he had that are the same age. I have them in with my 3 Welsummer chicks.

I bought a lot of my chicks at Webster Rd. Feed. They are getting a bunch more chicks in tomorrow. I'm not sure what breeds they are getting, but I am trying to resist the temptation. I know I will have to drop by and just look.

I am a little frustrated with a couple of my pullets in the big coop. I put a window in the coop up high so it would give light to the whole coop and now I have a couple chickens that are roosting on the window sill. It is about 7 ft. high. Their highest roost is just over 5 ft. high. Tonight I thought about climbing up and getting them down, but there were 29 other chickens on the roosts and I decided it would cause too much angry flapping and clucking if I disturbed them. Besides, I am not a young woman and I would hate to have to explain to the emergency room doc. how I broke my hip.

Helaine I paid 11.69 for a 40lbs bag of Stall Dry. the regular price is 12.99.

Vicki I am happy that you decided to keep things safe. You'll have to let me know what breeds of chicks that the feed store gets in. I just like knowing.
I really can't have any more. I think I have 42 chickens at the moment. I live in a sub-division house. The lot is fairly good size but I estimated that I could have up to 32 hens in my coop. So I will have to figure out which of my girls I will have to give up. The Jersey Giants will probably be easy to give up. They scare me some, and they aren't very friendly. I darn it I love all the rest of the chickens. My EE's hen are starting to let me pet them now. I am trying to handle the Welsummers and Salmon Faverolles more than I did the first batch of chicks. The SF's seem to very friendly little chicks. Thank you so much for telling me that Webster's had the SF chicks. I owe you some cookies.

With my two coops have space for about 62 chickens (50 in the big coop and 12 in the smaller coop). Currently we have 47.

My granddaughter and I want to get an incubator. I have to save room for next years chicks.

Granddaughter also wants me to build a seperate space for her to breed her own chickens. I have a place to do that, right up against the east side of my big coop. It would be easy to make it 8' x 10' and I would only have to build 3 sides. I got some free lumber off Craigs list, I have enough metal roofing, and I just got an exterior door for free.

Justbugged, I will check out Webster Feed's chicks in the morning.

Thanks Vivki!

What I don't understand is why I want this many hens. I am going to be egged out of house and home. I live alone most week with my husband home only on weekends. He travels a lot for work. So I really only need just 6 to 8 eggs a week. Oh well I still love my chickies. The neighbors will just have to help out with all the eggs. Or I will have to figure out how sell them legally. Uffda

Christina, check out my post this this morning on Incubating & Hatching Eggs. The post is "What do you do with all your extra chicks". I don't know how to put the link here. Anyway, this morning I gave the reason for my Tomato Lady title. Also, this post had a lot of interesting responses from people who have more chicks than they want to keep.

I plan on getting an incubator by spring. Maybe you would like to add a little Welsummer cockerel to your flock and hatch some eggs too. Just a thought. I'm sure I won't be using my incubator all the time and you might want to borrow it for a hatch.

As for all the eggs, I think sharing them is nice, or selling them, or donating them to a local food bank.

Thank you for the offer of the incubator. I had to buy one after I made the mistake of buy 3 dozen fertile eggs at auction 4 weeks ago. I have two surviving chicks from that hatch. I would be happy to lend you my little Hovabator if you want. I have to say the learning curve was a little steeper than I thought it would be.
I will check out that post on Incubating and hatching.
Christina.

hi all - again i've been absent for a long long time!!! what was i seeing about organic feed? i'll have to go back and see what that's about - i might be interested!!!!

anyone interested (or know anyone who might be?) in my blue orpington cockerel? he's gorgeous and i love him (and was hoping to keep him) - but he's officially bothering my neighbors. i don't want to have to craig's list him if i don't have to - i adore him and don't want him to land in someone's soup pot!!!!!

he's just over 4months old now and so very very handsome.... he's from exhibition quality stock, but i think his eyes are too light so i probably wouldn't use him as an exhibition bird or breeder - but that's not to say he wouldn't make a fantastic backyard flock roo!!!! and such eye candy.

Christina, I would love to borrow your incubator when I have some eggs to hatch. Right now my chickens are not laying yet. Soon, I hope. But I would like to wait till my Welsummers are older. I don't want to hatch just mutts unless they are EEs. Unless, of course, I hear of some hatching eggs locally.

I really should wait. My daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren are living with us. We are working on an addition (3 large rooms and a bathroom) and until that is done we really don't have room for anything more ......... unless ......... Wait! All I need to do is find some eggs. I just thought of a great place to put it. How big is it? I have an eating bar that we don't use. It just has some bamboo plants on it now. Perfect, if it will fit in that space.

Did you see Royce's incubator? It is way bigger than my daughter's college fridg. He had a lot of eggs in there too.

Happy hatching, Royce.

From Craigs. Some one around that area this might help you out..........
