That's great.
Because I live in Central / North Kitsap area, it might be easier if we could start our own branch here rather than travel to PO. If you call on Monday, maybe you could find out what it takes to start our own group. I bet that with a little outreach, we could find enough interested parents and kids...we would already have two!
If you find anything interesting out, I'd love to hear about it.
Thanks!

I haven't posted in awhile but I am always lurking. Welcome newcomers! We have our first batch in the bator and they are due next Wednesday! We are so excited!!!! :)

For those interested in Joining 4-H, I highly recommend it. Our kids have been in 4-H for the last 5 yrs and it is an awesome program. Here is a list of people to contact by county: http://4h.wsu.edu/EM2778CD/pdf/people.pdf

If
you are not getting much help from your contact person, may I suggest you contact Jana Ferris who is listed under Snohomish County. She is really really helpful. One of my close friends is the Poultry Program Snohomish County Leader, and if I can be of any help, please let me know. Please note, some counties are very active, and some not so much. Snohomish County has one of the most active 4-H programs in the country, so if your county is not so active, maybe try to get into a club in this county if you are nearby.

Tailfeathers, I definently want to be on your list for spring for Ameracauna's and Welsummers, for either eggs or chicks. Do you have Barnvelders too? I'd love a few of those also if you do.

Hope you are all enjoying this last bit of summer!

Tamara

For those of you considering 4H for your kids and poultry, I highly recommend it! Our kids were in a 4H dog club starting in middle school and my son stayed very involved all the way through high school.

They learned so much and not just about dogs either! I loved it that the group was made up of boys & girls from several different school districts all with a common interest of course. Of course 4H camp was also a great experience, not just as campers but later on when they volunteered as camp counslers.

We had a very experienced long time leader but we voluntered as assistant leaders for about 5 years. Believe it or not barn duty and other activities are fun for the parents too. If you can't find a group start one, it is so worth it. My kids and I have very fond memories of our 4H experiences.

If you are looking for DE to keep the coop dry and smell free, products like Stall Dri are a combo of DE and pulverised clay, about $14 for a 50# bag. That bag will last me and my little flock a very long time. These products are available at feed stores. This product is safe for use with all livestock including poultry and has worked extremely well for my girls.

I couldn't find straight DE anywhere locally, and with shipping it can be quite pricey. Even what I could read up on DE, people seemed divided on whether or not adding it to their feed is beneficial or not.

Thanks so much AnnesChicks!

I am looking forward to using it. I have been using straight DE in the pen and I don't have any odors right now. Now I am confused if I really need the Stall Dry or will the straight DE be good enough. I guess I will experiment on this idea. I have a local source for the DE it cost 26.00 for a 50lbs bag. I have been using it in areas that I need slug control, and in the Chicky pens. I have also been adding it the homemade dog meat mixture that I feed the dogs, and I have using it on myself also. I have been taking 3 heaping teaspoons a day. It doesn't taste all that bad. I put it in my homemade yogurt, and lemonade. I will tell my husband to let you all know if it kills me

P.S. I tried quoting and I did something wrong UffDa

I will ask my sister. She and her husband have had chickens at their home in North Seattle for over 20 years. She is in the Crown Hill neighborhood.

Thank you! I'd be thrilled to be able to avoid those drives!

I'm on Bainbridge Island. I think I'm further North than you. Where are you exactly, BirdyBird.

Gah, crzychknluvr, you're way south of me. I should change my thingy to say NW Washington.

Excel, I think that's the one. Thanks for the info.

DE works for slugs. Why didn't anyone say that before?

Anyone know where I can get 20-30 tons of the stuff.

Imp

I don't know if it will help anyone, but I read here that the Sumner Animal Club has DE.
