I have a 3 month old Buff Orpington chick that has an unidentified problem. She was acting like she couldn't walk and had a sore leg. When I picked her up to check out her leg she was holding it funny, but I couldn't see any injury. Then I noticed that her upper beak is way overgrown. Now I am not sure if she is unable to eat right because of her beak and is just weak, or if she does have an injured leg. What do you guys think. I will also post this on the Chicke Disease Forum.

Thanks. This is my first sick chick and I don't know what to do for her. I did give her some yogart and she ate that like there was no tomorrow. Right now she is snuggled under my coat at the computer with me. My DH would definately not approve of bringing her in the house, but it is going to get real cold out there tonight and she is all fluffed up like she is having trouble keeping warm.

I am too much of a newbie to be much help. I will say that sometimes I look at my chickens and see oddities that I would swear weren't like that yesterday. But it sounds like she needs help. I would make her an inside bed and keep giving TLC. Of course I live alone, so I never understand why bringing one in is a problem. I would do what I want, it is my house too. (Probably why I am not married)

Maybe you can mix a little bit of starter with the yogurt tomorrow. Make sure lots of water, and try adding the Apple Cider Vinegar that many use as a cure all. You should be able to find the ratio by searching by ACV in the search area.

If you have a disability and you claim your chicken as a service animal you can take her anywhere. I don't think she would enjoy the rides, but my bet is that she would love dinner out.

My little Buff Orpington chick has not stopped eating since I brought her in the house. Shhhhhh......she is under cover. I have given her yogart which she ate and ate. I just gave her some scrambled egg and she is wolfing that down now. She has not made any effort to stand up yet.

I think her beak was her original problem. She was in with 22 other chicks, some a little older than her. I think she couldn't eat easily out of the feeder I have because of her overgrown top beak. I think she got weak from not eating enough and maybe injured her leg as well. If eating well is a good sign, she is doing great now. Don't know how long I can keep her in the house, but for now she is in a box on my computer desk. She just keeps eating and eating and eating. Poor baby.

If not eating enough is her problem, then you can always put her back in with the others when you finally have to, but take her out and feed her seperately a couple times a day, and make sure she is drinking enough. That may help her out a lot.

Don't tell me you haven't seen all of those adds for the poultry diapers. They are everywhere I go online. I am rather surprised that I haven't seen them at our chicken store here on BYC

I know there is one lady that makes them for sure, I'll see if I can find the thread.

Hey all, just checking in! I am still alive and well. My ducks are great, they loved the snow today. My pullet has been laying like crazy, no sign of eggs from Olga (the hen). The drake always back talks when I lock them up at night. Still working at the pet store and love it! I am in charge of poultry and have several customers that ask for me by name now. I get to order the chicks when we need them, I have no limits as far as choice, well only 2 breeds but still. This time we have black minorcas and brown leghorns.

Well thats about it for now. If anyone in the Spokane area wants some chicks, come see me at Northwest Seed and Pet on Sprague, I work Wednesday-Sunday. We take free roosters all the time and often have chickens and chicks for sale.

I must admit that I had not known anything about chicken diapers. I find the whole concept absurd.

I am sure willing to look at some web site that sells the diapers. I really don't think that I could handle have the very intense relationship that having a service pet requires. My daughter has a service dog. It wonderful to have the little guy with her all the time, but it fills up her hands. (He is a Yorkie) This makes going to school and conducting business more difficult at times. Enough of me on this interesting and sort of silly idea.

On a another note my Cuckoo Marans laid a 86 gram egg today. That is 3 oz even. It's huge. This is the second one I have gotten this week from the girls. One of my EE's laid a egg that size ,I think it was on Tuesday. Rock on Girls.
