Rainplace, you'll be happy to know 5 of the little peeps are doing great. Unfortunately I lost Riley the other night

I don't know how I missed that yesterday. Poor Riley. I'm sorry you had to go through losing her.

Back home safe and sound. I got lots of nice things. No food processor or salad shooter, unfortunately, but nice other things!

Spent Christmas with my parents, son and dil, her family, and of all all things, my ex-husband (divorce in 1978) and his current wife. We had a great time. Everyone seemed happy and joyful. If there were any mis-steps, they were probably mine.

On another note, did you notice that my pic of the week got a short run.... So sad for Henry.

Donna - I have Cuckoo Marans. They are 19 weeks.

How many are you thinking about? I also have Welsummers, which are another dark egg layer. And also (Thanks to Mike) I have Barnevelders and Black Marens 3 1/2 weeks. I expect to be re-homing 1 of each of the first 3. And maybe one of the Barnevelders if I have 2 females. All are potentially dark egg layers.

On that same line, I wonder if anybody is ordering from Sandhill this next year. I want to get a couple of Black Pendanesca to add to my dark egg layer group.

My chickens had a smorgasbord of Pumpkin, Apple, Cranberries, Broccoli, Baby Bok Choy, Wild Bird Seed Mix, Scratch, Pears and mixed grains. I piled all of it (cornocopia style) in a couple of bins and put them in their coop before I left on Wednesday. Everythink looks pretty picked over, so I think they had a great time with it. I hope it made up for the fact that they had to give up their all day range that they normall get.

Moody is back helping me herding chickens as of tonight. What a champ. He is really loving his new job. And I miss his help when he is gone back to his dad's.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas or other holiday celebration.

Glad you had a good Christmas.

No food processor or salad shooter

Here's a link to my extra one. I actually pulled it out to make sure it wasn't covered in rust. It is in perfect shape, and actually looks nice. I had never opened the box before. Has some good reviews. If you want it before February just PM me an address I'll get it in the mail this weekend.

Yeah Poor Henry was pix of the pre-Christmas. Guess it just means you need to take more pictures, and submit.

I sent my address Russ. Thanks!

Donna. I forgot to say that I am really excited about the 29 gifts. I am going to do it too. I will subscribe to your topic so I can see how you are doing, and will share my experiences too. I love the idea, and hadn't heard of it before. Thanks for the inspiration.

I'm not sure how many chickens I'm thinking of. It was sort of a shock to realize I wanted to get chickens! But I do really like the deep brown of the cuckoo marans.
It sounds like you had a great Christmas! I'm glad you're back safe and sound.
Woot! You're gonna take up the challenge with me!

Donna

I have a hand raised Cuckoo Marans Roo. My sister raised him as an only chick that her friend had hatched. My sister lives in north He is beautiful bird. I am going to have to see if the auction is open tomorrow. Unless I hear from anyone, who wants him by 9:30am tomorrow morning. I have to have him to the auction by about 10:00am Saturday morning. I have been able to upload some pictures of the Cuckoo Marans Roo. His foot is odd, but it doesn't seem to bother him.

I thought I would report back on how much I like the heat emitter that I purchased back during the freeze. Well, I love it!
thumbsup.gif
I can heat the coop up several degrees without having the light on all night. And all of the energy goes to heat, and none to light. Then I can use an energy efficient bulb for light in the evening to increase the daylight hours now during the winter.

I am going to get another sometime soon so that I can use it in the brooder when I have chicks. I have also thought I might add one to a brooder lamp in the bathroom because it is like an icebox in there. I can place it low in the area where my three water sources come into the house. That way, it can heat the 'popular seat' and also help keep pipes from freezing.

Here is a link to show the type of item I am talking about: http://www.amazon.com/Repticare-Watt-Ceramic-Infrared-Emitter/dp/B0002AQCPU/ref=pd_sbs_k_1
There
are several sources for these. Any pet place that caters to lizards and snakes should have them.

I was trying to keep this to myself and "buck up". But I am just so sad and mad that I can't keep it in.

I just got a call from my mom and the guy that helps me with my chickens. He lives in the house behind my parents on their property. He has had a head injury and has lived on the streets for part of his life. Also he is an alcoholic. Anyway, while we were gone, we had put my 3 cockerels who I had here by my computer with the meat chickens that we are going to butcher before the new ordinance officially kicks in. I was going to have the one pet like rooster returned today and was going to see if I could find him a home, or I was considering replacing Pinky with him because he is so much more pet-like than Pinky.

Anyway, during the night he started to crow (probably cold) and so, my chicken helper went out and killed him and put him in the freezer. I need his help in order to continue with my chickens. Also, I know that he has a totally different concept of what chickens are to me. I feel like it was my right to decide what to do with Archie. But it was also my responsibility to him that I be the one to do it. I always say a little prayer of thanks before I cull a chicken. I am so sad. I am so angry that I can't contain it.

I am feeling like I have to start my 29 days of giving today. They say that it is important to give some things you don't think you can afford to part with. Today I choose to give away forgiveness for this act. I just decided that as I was writing this. I have to say it has helped. Thanks Donna again.

well i am mad at my friend who was supposed to check on my chickens

i got home today to find 20 eggs in the nest box... no water and no food....
they rushed out of the coop to eat snow....

i know there was tons of waste feed mixed in the straw and the flock block helped them out too...
but i wonder how they went 2 days with out water????
some of their tail feathers were nibbled on.....

so. i spoiled the chickens with oatmeal and filled the feed and water.
they are outside enjoying this sunny day

the chicks i picked up from nyrail are soo cute....
i set them in a little pen outside... and watched them..... they stood.... and stood.... i had some water and scratch.... they ate.... then stood and sharted shivering....
i watched the other chickens observe the chicks..... and have decided not to put them in the coop with them tonight... because a. the roosts are too high for the chicks to reach... and they are still peeping... one of the chicks was trying to fight with the small barred rock of mine through the fence... so i will have them in the garage for a while ... and in that pen during the day if it stays above 30....
cause i think this cold here was a shock for them...
they are in the kennel in the back of the truck with feed and warm water that i mixed with a little sugar (energy) and salt. and i chopped up carrots. then i filled a ziplock bag with hot water for them to cuddle up against.

they are soo cute..

my parents said that this was my christmas present this year.
26 degrees at the chicken coop this afternoon (its in the shade of the trees)

Thanks everyone. Oddly enough, when I decided to forgive him, it has helped a great deal. I am not sure I have ever experienced such a dramatic example of that in my own life. I am really glad that rainplace posted about the 29 gifts. It has really been a godsend in this case. I really need the help of my friend, and I am not sure I could have continued if I hadn't been able to let it go.

Pretty short on eggs today. I figure it is either the fact that they were cooped up with very little natural light. Or it is because they were cooped up and couldn't range at all. Lot's of food, but not the usual freedom.

I am so glad you didn't lose any of your flock ReiMiraa. Your friend must have totally forgotten about the chickens with all of the stress of the holiday prep. Don't be too hard on her. I used to have trouble with my memory when I finished finals back in school. Or could it be that she just forgot the last day? Either way, I am sorry.

Boxing Day! I used to do that. I don't have any employees now. If I did, I think I might find it hard to do their job anyway. I think what I will do is get a larger than planned tip out for my paper delivery people. They are the closest thing I have to employees right now.
