Hey Mike. If I want to hatch some of Pinky and the girls eggs before he is not with me anymore, how do I do it.... I mean, how do I store the eggs until hatching time. I thought you would be the best one to ask about that. Oh, and for how long?



Weaveagarden: I only know that they way I save my eggs are a week at a time.
If you have an egg turner, place your eggs in.
Try to never let your temp drop below 60*.
I do this so all the eggs hatch on the same day,
I will keep eggs up to 7 days this way, but you must remember that you have to keep the embryo stimulated.
Turning like it was incubating is the best way.
keep out of direct sunlight and never let the temp get over 80*. If it does go over 80 I have had them hatch too but not as well.
So then if you want your chicks to hatch on Tuesday, put the eggs in the incubator on Tuesday "21 days"
This 21 day cycle works with chickens and other species that have a hatch at that time.

Thanks Mike. Now to find a broody hen. Mine were all fighting to stay on the nest all day until I decided I might just try this. Now, nobody.

I think it would be fun to hatch them and then give them to somebody for some easter chicks. I have a feeling Hoquiam may be filling up with chickens soon. Now that the council went and made it so public that people can raise 8 legally. What was once only 10 or 11 of us raising about a total of 200 is going to jump to adding at least another 0 on the end of that. I wonder if they ever thought of that.

Thank you for all the advice re: shed moving. Ronnie: I am not sure I am competent enough to answer this.

The shed has a plywood floor held up by a 2x4 frame. The whole thing sits on cinder blocks and is about 11/2 to 2 feet off the ground. Ruster: I do have a tree across the yard but don't want to damage the tree in any way. It's the tree that could fall on my head in the next windstorm. I could build another coop and use the current coop/shed for garden stuff or let the kids play in it. Didn't a couple of folks use those shipping containers for sheds? How did that work out?

I would also be able to help on a Sunday or Monday afternoon. How old is the shed? if $$ is not a big issue and you need another shed for storage It might be easier to just build another coop

S.C.C. Unless this is a tiny tree or already about to fall (in which case it should be removed) it can be used as an anchor point with no damamge. That is why I said use a strap not chain or cable.. Yes if the shed is attached to the blocks then it makes it a little tougher. Is there any chance you could take it apart into sections like roof walls and floor. Move and reasemble.

BTW I think I forgot to mention earlier. I set 14 eggs in the bator today. Should be fun as 8 are going to be "DESIGNER" eggs. White silkie hen x silver duck wing OEGB roo Woody.

As promised, pictures of our five Mystery Chicks:

Now 2 weeks old, the Mystery Chicks are roughly 1/3 feathered. I'm beginning to get ideas about what they might be, though it's anyone's guess at this point. Just a reminder, our options most likely are: Buff Orpington, Marans (Cuckoo), Golden Campine, Barred Plymouth Rock, Rhode Island Reds.

Our first contender, is the largest & tallest of the black pullet and easily the flightiest. That alone makes me wonder if it's a Maran, our BCMs are crazy flighty and twitchy. This chick has a very long neck and distinctive bands on her wings. I notice that she's not as cozy as the other chicks, who prefer to curl up together whenever possible.

Our second contender is the fluffiest of the golden chicks. She's incredibly calm, loves being handled and has the loveliest patterned feathers. It's hard to say at this point, but I'm really wondering if that's doubled penciling. If so, she's likely a Plymouth Rock/RIR mix.

Our third contender is the smaller golden chick. Again, fairly calm and easily handleable. Her shape is shorter and thinner than the 2nd. Her feathers are a bit softer than the 2nd's and constant with only the lightest banding. I'm wondering if she's an Orp mix. Granted, either of the two yellow chicks could be Golden Campines - which I'd adore, but sadly their legs are the wrong color. Not sure what the dominant is on that, though.

Our forth and fifth contenders are black pullets. Very flighty and twitchy, lightly banded feathers on one's wings.
