You mean like this? Truss time!

Mickey;
What you have is just fine. The chickens will love to roost on your trusses.
All they need is somewhere to get out of the elements. No insulation or fancy nothing. It will just get covered in dust and poop, then you'll clean it and start all over agian.
A good floor is the key. Something you can run a snow shovel across to scoop everything out. The rest is just a chicken shed.
As far as location if it's in the shade that will be good in the summertime, and if it's in the direct sunlight well Winter comes every year.
Are you going to let them free range or build them a run?

Well, to build a run or let them "range". That's another question I've been tussling with. I do know that there are Bald Eagles in the area and a hawk or two. My biggest concern is a couple of cats in the neighborhood and my two mini dauchands. It looks like I will build them a covered run (wire) with an area that is rain/wind sheltered but again I'm just in the thinking/planning mode.
If my dogs are ok with the chickens then I would probably let them range until there is a problem, if any.

when I first started out with chickens. I got two ea. of the following: RIR,BR ,GSL( Golden sexlink) and White leghorns. If you want eggs and not worried about them being pets White leghorns do lay a nice egg. but they are very flightly. The California white lays a smaller egg. But she is my most friendly bird. If I had to chose between Rhode Is reds and Golden sexlinks I would take the sexlinks. they started laying earlier then any of my chickens and they lay almost every day. My BR lays a small cream color (almost white) egg almost every day. I don't think I will get anymore BR in the future.
One thing to think about too, is my Calf. white and leghorns eat way less food then my other chickens

Build a nice secure run. then they can use that even when you can't be there to oversee. You could always let them range sometimes too. My run has the PVC netting that they sell at Home Depot for about $10. 42"x25' Pretty cheap to put together a run for them Not secure against a determined predator, but will keep them safe in most situations during the day.

Also, if the Trusses are just 1X4's I would go ahead and put some 2X2s on top or put another 1X4 right up against every one of them. a 1" roost is a little hard on the feet of the larger breeds that you are talking about. Or if you don't want them in the trusses (imagine chicken poop on your head). You could get some cheap sheeting of some kind. Like the siding you mentioned. Not many $$$'s and problem solved. I would also add some lower roosts for sure for the non-athletic girls in the bunch. My barred rock is not a flyer at all.

Also, better give some thought to those EE's again. You will be wanting some, I promise you. Or do like the girls posting a few posts ago and go for the pure deal. Get some Ameraucanas - The source of the colored egg gene in the EE's

By the time you pay the ferry and gas, you're just about breaking even or paying more than on the shipping unless you're driving an electric car, which I know you're not, unless rainplace or someone could swing by and pick it up and hold it till the party.

sigh. this has been a depressing week in my area

i live near wenatchee and if you havent heard the news:

tuesday a 17 year old girl went missing (a good girl) after her class. and a local retired (near where i live) farmer was separated while snowmobiling with friends.

today both bodies were found
his was in a canyon

hers was in crecent bar, at the columbia river with her feet in the water.....

Now is seems the illusion of safety is gone from wenatchee. she was only 3 years younger than me.

the day before valentines day is a sad day, and tomorrow when more people learn about this. hearts will be broken.

i didnt know the girl, but after seeing her face everywhere, i mean everywhere in every hall and classroom in the college and on digital signs on the roads... the fact she wasn't found safely is just a bummer....
and now wenatchee is a little less safer.
